You will need shoes with good traction on the granite and trekking poles are always recommended for stability. There is no water other than little streams at the beginning of the hike and none on the granite, so bring all the water you will need.

HikingGreat!

awesome hike, not too many people. nice varied terrain. starts out paved then quickly turns to narrow dirt trail. nice trees, meadows, and amazing views at north dome across to half dome. indian arch detour was worth the uphill walk, but it’s gravely so be careful not to slip. saw a deer and many ground squirrels. had a late start and hit the trail at 11, wasnt too hot (nice breeze and cool in the shade) and arrived at north dome around 4:30ish after a lunch stop and indian arch detour. didn’t quite make it to north dome, but still fantastic views along the granite ridge before north dome itself. took about two hours to get back. highly recommend!

Hike to North Dome. Spectacular views of Half Dome, Clouds Rest, and Yosemite Valley. Hike includes a short but steep side trip to see a natural arch.

Highly recommend this underrated hike. Don't go all the way to Indian Rock unless you really want to, but DO visit Indian Arch on your way to North Dome. Check out my video and full guide with tips at HikingGuy com

Awesome trail with a phenomenal view! First section is forested, then comes out to rocky exposed trail for a while, so proper sunscreen/coverage are important. Took about 6hr with plenty of stops. Indian Arch is worth the steep detour, beautiful view, but I didn’t go any farther down that section. For the most part I’d say this was a moderate and simple trail, but the last 3/4 mile or so before North Dome gets steep, rocky, and difficult. The trail isn’t obvious at this part either so pay attention to the sign pointing out 0.5 miles left. But a fun challenge! Incredible views of Half Dome, Yosemite valley and so much more! Highly recommend!

An excellent hike with several viewpoints to check out prior to the ultimate viewpoint at top of North Dome. Challenging at times to figure out the path. Go early to beat the heat and crowd - we saw 7 deer before we saw another human. Not that it was crazy crowded - we saw approximately 30 people. Stringent coming back from North Dome but you have to see that view. And don’t miss Indian Rock - do it before heading down to North Dome. Highly recommend - completed with my family in 5 hours but could have been an hour quicker if we didn’t stop at spots for photos and rest.

The best trail in Yosemite for a view of Half Dome. The North Dome Trail is pretty easy for the most part, except for a little climbing down to get to North Dome itself. Indian Arch is an added bonus and it’s just 0.3 miles off the North Dome trail. If you’re just looking for some views and incredible pictures, there are many spots on the North Dome Trail to view Half Dome and you won’t have to go all the way to North Dome. The trail is great, but you can definitely cut parts out of it if you don’t want to complete the whole hike.

Pretty good hike, once you get to north dome great views on half dome. Yes it was quite a bit of going up after visiting north dome but if you take it easy not too bad. The Indian Rock Arch is pretty cool but map takes you farther out with no clear trail and or destination just some rock. If you are following the map stop at the Arch it’s not worth going farther.

This is absolutely a hidden gem in Yosemite. If you’re looking for a hike a little easier than Clouds Rest or Yosemite Falls, but with epic views...this is it. Amazing views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley. Very few people on the trail. We had the dome all to ourself in the afternoon for about 45 minutes. We decided not to take the detour to Indian Rock. Also note that while the tip of North Dome has the best views, you can stop further up (roughly a half mile away from the tip) and still have great views if you want a bit shorter of a hike. Save stamina for the hike back up, BRING BUGSPRAY, and enjoy one of my favorite hikes in Yosemite. (North Dome views would be particularly mind blowing at sunset if you are willing to hike back in the dark or camp somewhere along the trail)

Hiked on 6.17.20 and the conditions were perfect. Arrived at the trailhead at 12:00 and there were two fully empty bear boxes and about 12 cars. Trail was clear of any obstructions, as rangers likely came earlier in the day or the day prior and cut through any downed trees on the trail. Probably saw about a dozen people the whole day, most were heading in the opposite direction. Most of the first half of the trail is downhill or flat. Only 667 feet of gain once at North Dome, and only three other people there around 3:00 p.m. We had the whole place to ourselves for about an hour and then met one other hiker on our way out. Didn't see anyone else the rest of the hike out with the exception of a lone deer. Hiked to Natural Arch, but the remaining trail wasn't clear to Indian Rock. Just over 11 miles and 2,200 feet of gain. Bugs were out and most prevalent on the return hike. We didn't see as many on the way out due to windy conditions.

Few fallen trees blocking the trail in places (first couple miles), so make sure you’re comfortable hopping over things. Other than that, nice moderate trail, with a great view of Half Dome. Save some gas in the tank for the way back up- most of the elevation gain is returning.

I’ve hiked the cables to the summit of Half Dome. Stared at it from the sub dome. Looked down on it from Clouds Rest. Seen it from Glacier and Olmsted Points. But NOTHING has compared to seeing it from The North Dome! What a fantastic hiking experience. Mostly down on the way there so the blood was pumping on the return. But on this November day, I’d never experienced this much solitude in Yosemite. Started at 930am. Got there in about 2 hours. Arrived at the same time as the only other guy on the trail. We stayed at the summit for about an hour and were the only ones there. AMAZING! Even came across a huge Mother Bear with her cubs on the way back. Yosemite does it again!

This is such a great trail. If you find the right time of year it’s also very empty, which is really nice. One of the best views of the valley for the amount of effort.

Fantastic hike with a huge payoff waiting at the end. Good challenge the last mile. I could have sat with that view all day. Loved it. Going again.

If it is views of Half Dome you are looking for, look no further than this hike to North Dome. Only one moderately technical portion to the hike is on the way down to the dome approach. You scramble a short section of open rock. However, it is not an extremely steep or treacherous. Indian Rock is a good area to rock scramble or boulder. Lots of good views available from on top of the various rock formations.

This is definitely one of my favourite hikes ever. The trail starts off going downhill (so remember this on the way back for a last little push), through forest. There were spectacular views at the end, it was absolutely worth the couple of hours to get up there. I struggled with the last section, as there was a steep slope downhill with lots of loose gravel, so I'd recommend using hiking poles, and there was the obvious incline up to the end of the dome. I sat up there for a good while with my lunch, just soaking in the views. Allow yourself extra time to absorb everything at the end - don't rush off and take your time to take in the beautiful scenery!

This is such a beautiful hike and not too challenging. We started early and didn’t have any issues with bugs. Like the previous review, hiking in is easier than hiking out, so I recommend hiking up to Indian dome on your way in. Lunch on North Dome is the best.
