Pine Mountain Trail is a 6.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Valyermo, California that features beautiful wild flowers and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from March until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

The trail is indeed 6.5 miles, round trip , if you begin where one should a couple/ few miles past Guffy. The trail is basically a straight line up the mountain. There are only a few soft shoulder turnouts to park in where the truck trail meets the Pine Mtn trail, so first come first serve. If you do start at Guffy, you are in for a much longer haul as you will be traveling on PCT which traces the Blue Ridge Truck trail. Lots of scree. Trekking poles help. I saw only one other person when I went the day after Memorial Day. Mildly strenuous but fun in dry months. In winter I imagine it would get pretty sketchy at places. Dogs def need to be sure footed, as a previous reviewer mentioned.

Very good hike. Strenuous, but worth while. Started from the base of Acorn Trail early morning and moved my way up (brought my husky along for the adventure). Found the trailhead without any trouble. From there it’s a bit of a scramble in certain spots. Just be cautious and watch your footing and everything will work out fine. The summit is definitely worth the effort. This is also a good path to reach Dawson and Badly for those who are feeling adventurous. Bring plenty of water and a good pair of boots. I advise trekking poles too if you have them. Made it back to town just as the sun was setting. I will be doing this hike again to reach Mt. Antonio when the weather warms up. :)

Started in Manker flats and took Register ridge to the top of Mt Harwell then traversed the ridge to Baldy, took the North backbone trail down then back up to Dawsons peak then back down and up to Pine Mountain. Ridgeline the entire route, some fun scrambling. Returned the way I came. Full 9hr day due to the steepness of terrain. Great technical hike.

Parked at Guffy and took the fire road to the trail head so I wouldn't miss the Sheep Mountain sign. There was a couple sitting there having lunch. In two trips they're the only people I've seen up there. It was my first hike in over a year and it totally kicked my butt. The closer you get to the summit the steeper it gets. Going up, there were a couple of times I was on all four in scramble mode. The summit was magnificent, and again I was disappointed I waited too late in the day to continue on to Baldy. The trip back is all down hill and steep with lots of scree. On the way up I was on all four, on the way down I often decided the best way was to squat and slide. I skipped the fire road and took the PCT back to Guffy. Fantastic afternoon.
