Went on this trail this past weekend. This trail makes for a good training hike. I usually take the trail clockwise so that I hit the steep incline right away. When I got to the top, I took a short walk to an overlook of the New Melones resservoir. It was a beautiful day, nice wild flowers. Keep in mind that there is little to no shade on this trail Enjoyed the hike though!

They have closed the road (Covid-19). Can't wait to check it out when it opens, beautiful out here!

Tried to do this today but turned around when we hit the last couple miles as it said it was one-way and on private property. Signs posted everywhere, no parking. I love to hike but am less inclined to park on someone's property as I wouldn't care for folks doing that myself. Disappointing. Maybe there's another way to access it? Ended up doing another trail in Vallecitos about 15 mins down the road at the bridge which was fantastic.

Trail was just what we needed! We went to the left trail and it was steep! Please choose if you are physically fit to hike steep incline. And, still, think it’s the better of 2 choices. Wildflowers were beautiful, company the best, and insects too!

Perfect trail to get some beautiful views and heart pumping exercise. The loop is 2.9 miles. At the trailhead you have two choices. Go left for a steep incline that is short. Go right for a loooong slow incline.

First hike ever so my perception is different. When you start off you can pick which way you want to start as it is a loop. Going to the left is steep but a shorter way to the top. Going to the right it is a gradual incline but was hard if this is your first time. I started off going to the right. As you are almost halfway through you’ll come to a fork, go to the left of you want to see the lake. Nice view! We thought the incline was over but there will be one more incline (again stay to the left). The way down seems like less un-chartered territory with a much narrower path.

The steepness of the clockwise route should not be ignored. We took the opposite route and it has some pretty good uphills as well. Went off "trail" at one point as there are many side trails not included in the map. Easy enough to backtrack. Weather was pleasant and I wonder what the spring will bring in terms of wildflowers. Not too busy but everyone we met were friendly folks.

Peoria is always a good ride! Huge parking lot with outhouse that is usually decent. There are several different trails to take & cattle water tanks on top of the hill for the horses. The lake view is nice. Lots of hill climbing - good for getting into condition. Water spickets & picnic tables also at the parking area. I saw someone post about “guns” - you do need to be aware of hunting season, but we’ve never had problems with anyone and also, the prison is near by, so just be aware of your surroundings.

As someone who lives on the valley floor, this was a good little cardio workout. It’s less steep when you take the anti-clockwise loop, but it’s still steep and a little muddy (as of mid-January). But the views of the hills and the lake are wonderful, there’s oak trees all over (it’s shaded behind a hill in the afternoon), and windswept fields too. Highly recommended!

Spent a lovely Monday hiking out here til sunset. read lots of reviews saying that going clockwise meant lots of uphill so i went right and went completely off trail. can’t say i didn’t enjoy it tho! had a nice view of the water halfway through to the end of my hike! Dogs sure loved it, and so did i, i can’t wait to come back up here and hike again, perhaps clockwise Lol

I hiked this yesterday. It's a good trail with great views of the lake and hills. It's pretty easy for the most part, but steeply up if you go clockwise. Lots of birds if you enjoy birding.

nice trail. went later in the afternoon so there was shade on the backside. if you go left first it's about 70 flights of stairs up (according to my Garmin). but then gradual down. beautiful views of the Stanislaus River and New Melones Lake.... kicked my dogs butt too.

I’ve been going deer hunting here for several years. When you go up the road past the fire station, you come to a gate (you park there). There are 2 sides of this area, the left side of the road gets you close to the new melones damn and connects the the parking for trucks with horse trailers. It is mainly at very minimal elevation gain and drop. The right side of the road has more trails you can go through. I decided to take my bike out today, and take an immediate left, as soon as you enter the right side, straight up the mountain. From the top where the tower is at, it’s a nice bike ride to the middle of the mountain and back to the vehicle. There’s a T section at the middle of the mountain and if you continue straight instead of going back down, you’ll eventually reach a fence line to private property as well as another trail that leads to the lake. Very hard to go straight up the mountain especially carrying a bike up

I gave it a 4 star rating because it is easy to find and was a decent workout. Just drive to the end of Old Melones Rd. to the gate and the parking area is right there next to the trailhead. Whether you start clockwise or counter you will have to ascend steeply for about 40 minutes or so. It levels out on top and becomes a pleasant walk with the lake in view. Then it's back downhill to the parking place. One reviewer said it seemed longer than 2.8mi and I agree. There was noone else in sight and the trail had no graffiti or trash about which was nice considering how over-used other trails in Tuol Co are becoming. This is definitely not one for 100 degree days as the ascent is somewhat strenuous, but when it is green and covered with poppies in the spring it's quite lovely.

Went on a Monday Morning. Only ran into a couple other people. Different trail option to make it shorter or longer. One fallen tree, but easy to get around. Path clear and apparent.

First 1/2 mile is a steep climb. No good view of the water until you get to the back side of the hills. Good workout hike, pretty views of the surrounding hills. Overall an okay hike.

This is a beautiful trail in the springtime. Don’t mind the bees they won’t bother you (if you are allergic beware!). We are hiking with three kids age ranging from 3-8. The 3 year old completed the entire hike on his own. The trail was challenging and steep however, the views are so rewarding! If you take a lunch just be aware there is not really a place to sit. Keep an eye out for ticks. Saw some larger tracks (probably coyote) so keep an eye out for wildlife, and keep the little ones close. Make sure you have plenty of water, a first aid kit, and a good camera! Make sure to pick up any garbage to help keep the trail clean! Get up, Get out, Go Create an Adventure! Total Time: 3 hours (stopped for lunch) (3 year old speed lol) Weather: 67 Degrees

Beautiful hike on a mild winter day. Everything was green and gorgeous. Great bird watching. We went clockwise, straight up....it was a burner for sure but not difficult. Well worth it. Make sure you take the side trail on the left at the top to a vista that overlooks New Melones dam, Lake Tullock and the Copperopolis Quarry Mine. Will definitely revisit, maybe in the spring to enjoy the wildflowers. Hike #10 #52hikechallenge

1: This loop is not 2.8 miles. It is longer! It will also lead you to Table Mountain access at Shell Road if you don’t cut down the mountainside to gain access the bottom of the valley. 2. There are bears there. Yes, BEARS! USE EXTREME CAUTION! 3. There is a heavy duty extension cord running across the middle of the trail. 4. Beautiful view of the lake. 5. All Trails should enhance the warnings for this area.

I love the reviews. So innocent. They portray Peoria Flat as it should be ... without the guns. Yes, guns. I trail ride, and take my horse to Peoria Flat to enjoy the trails, the exercise, the vistas. So why do have to endure the guns??? More and more lately. Yes, they have their rights, but should they be shooting non stop around families, children, dogs, horses, hikers, riders??? It's not right!!! I had a bullet fly by my head. I suspect they were aiming at my dog. What is going on???

Wow this Trail is rated moderate? I think it should be rated challenging. I went with a friend and when we got to what we thought was the top where you can see the lake we looked and saw that it was still more of a steep uphill climb. We were not up for that we turned around and came back down. We went counterclockwise.

A good workout, lovely views at the top and quite peaceful. Just what I was looking for on a Saturday morning with my dog. It is a fairly steep climb so definitely bring your poles and boots.
