My FAVORITE TRAIL!! Epic! Great work out. Steep uphill and downhill
Awesome hike! We ended up continuing past Vandeventer to Fern Canyon which looped back to the Trading Post, this added about an additional mile but the extra views were worth it. There’s some pretty steep switchbacks on this trail so be prepared for that. Also, this trail gets HOT, the temperature was in the mid 50’s the day we hiked but it felt more like the 70’s. I drained my 2.5L Camelback, be sure to take plenty of water.
Beautiful day for hiking, and this is a very nice trail. This trail is located on an Indian reservation, and there is a fee to enter the area. Also, during the high season on weekends, there can be a long line of cars to pay the fee and get through the gate. Nice, well maintained trails, the lower part through the palm oasis is easy and then uphill moderate hiking through rocks and desert brush after about 1 mile. Beautiful views on the upper trail, especially now after the rains. Very kid friendly, no dogs allowed. During the winter season after a rain, there are several streams and small waterfalls. A little out of the way for me, but very close to downtown Palm Springs and I will definitely make the trek again. Miles of interconnecting trails on the upper parts. Definitely one of the best hiking experiences I've had so far!
The park closes at 5 to allow for the wildlife to take over, so we were only able to get about 5 miles in, but the trail was beautiful with a nice mix of mountain and desert views. I give it a 10 on the Lenny Pepperbottom "neature" scale. Take the warning about rattlesnakes serious - about the time we let down our guard we made a new friend crossing our path within a few steps.
