HikingGreat!

A good trail for all seasons. I’m glad I started clockwise from the bear creek lot, it was even hot in the morning, so it was nice that the last 4 miles were mainly shady. From the dam to the Far East end of the Lake is fire roads, so wide and well maintained, the last four miles on the south east part of the lake was trail. Different trees on each side. More coast live oaks and bay laurel on the north, the south added in madrones, some black oaks (suprise) English and black walnut and pines. Good mix of flat and ups and downs. Would be a great trail to add into marathon or half marathon training, definitely give you a great workout. Lots of deer, turkey and coyote/dog tracks, a few snake trails, but with the heat the only wildlife was lizards and birds, mostly in the shade. It was great to have the trail mostly to myself, just a few runners and walkers out. Geese, cormorants, ducks and grebes made up most of the water birds, there was a white egret roost in one of the fingers of the lake. Definitely will be back to hike this one.. when the weather is cooler.

Very clean and easy to follow. Bugs are in the air but not too bad. 60/40 shade to sun ratio. Later in the morning the sun beats pretty intensely. Saw coyotes but they ran away immediately.

The trail starts off with shady a narrow. You start to incline gradually; there aren't steep inclines on this trail. The views are spectacular and the trails are beautiful. You get about 60/40 sun/shade. The reservoir is a pretty sky blue and there aren't many people which makes it a serene hike.

You’ll need to purchase a permit online before going for this one and register yourself on the paper sheets at the beginning of Oursan Trail. Perfect for training. Quite a few ups and downs which make it a bit strenuous. A lot of wind in some places which made the overall experience rather cool (even though very exposed in a big part of the trail). We saw a rattlesnake crossing the trail, a coyote hunting, bunnies foraging, lizards, blue jays. There are a few benches once you cross the dam but that’s it. Very few people too. The second part of the hike after the dam is, for most of it, a single; only space for one person. I’m grateful for that experience we had there and I recommend it!

Running

A little overgrown, watch out for ticks. Other than that fantastic half marathon track with just enough climbing to make it interesting but stays completely runnable all the way through!

Hike was great. I thought there was more shaded area than not. We started from a different parking lot. So, we covered most of the incline within the first half. So, the second half was just rolling hills. Nice! The water was beautiful.
