There was more snow that I had anticipated. I would definitely recommend gators, crampons, and poles. The views are stunning once we reached the top.

This might be my ideal San Gabriels hike. Icehouse Canyon is work, but beautiful, and by the time you get to the saddle you’re more than halfway there in mileage and 2/3 in elevation. After that the trail is more gradual and meandering with increasingly stunning and open views. This time of year you have to be prepared for weather: I tried on 12/24 and got shut out by snow and wind at the saddle even though neither was in the forecast. Went again 12/27 and made it up and back before the snow. There was enough snow and ice to make microspikes and poles necessary just past the saddle most of the way to the summit. RT in 7 hours with about 50 min of breaks.

It was snowing and there was some icy snow after the saddle point. Great view and worth the effort. Edited: These two days of rain (after Dec 28) should have thicken the snow enough. I would recommend snow shoes and micro-spikes.

First winter hike of the year for me. Six hours round trip, I’d say microspikes absolutely mandatory to take any apprehension away. Layer up, great views at the top, didn’t see many people.

RunningGreat!Snow

Such a great route! Beautiful views, good trail, relatively secluded/quiet (after the saddle). Still snow on the north-facing slopes (after the saddle)... micro spikes would be helpful (especially on the downhill), but you can manage without, if you’re careful.
