Getting There

As of May 2020, users have reported the trailhead parking lot a temporary closure due to COVID-19. It is thus only accessible by foot or bike. Please see the park's website for up to date information: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=549 Sometimes all you need is an easy stroll by the ocean to refresh your spirits. This track along the Pacific Ocean north of Santa Cruz is one of the best places in California to do just that. You'll see gulls, geese, pelicans and other waterfowl and you might hear the distant bark of passing sea lions. If your timing's right, you might even spot passing whales on their annual migrations. Another bonus: touring the grounds of a farm replete with antique cars, farm machinery and other remnants of farming life along the Pacific in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Wilder family ran a dairy farm on this land from the 1880s to the 1970s. This track is very basic: just start out from the parking lot at the Wilder Ranch State Park visitors center and follow Old Cove Landing Trail along the ocean. Eventually it turns northward again and loops back to where you started. Best time to go: Views of the ocean are more clear in winter and spring; in summer the coast tends to get fogged in. The park is very popular on weekends; a weekday visit will be much more pleasant. December through April is also peak whale migration season.

Park at the staging area off of Coast Rd. Parking fees: $10 per carload, but you can park free along Highway One and hike in. Park HQ includes bathrooms, running water and a gift shop. Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset

Use extreme caution around the cliffs near the ocean. Dress in layers: it can be very chilly near the ocean and you'll want to wear a wind-breaker. Wear sunscreen; there's no shade here.

The Wilder Ranch is 1.8 miles north of the Western Drive stoplight in Santa Cruz

Great and easy trail with amazing views. Can be any level of hiker and be able to enjoy. Kid and dog friend but dogs should be on leash due to cliffs. Very scenic and lovely and a bit chilly due to the wind. Gets heart rate going but barely any elevation. A lot of bikers and traffic. Also pack packing with dog is great.

Beautiful flat trail for a relaxing early morning or evening walk. No Shades so pick your time of the day. We went there late afternoon and was amazing! One of the rare days with beautiful blue skies and most comfortable ocean breeze. 1/3 of the trail is along the coastline. There are two small beaches along the trail where you can enjoy some sand time.

Definitely a great morning walk. Flat trail throughout with a nice view right along the cliffs. Recommended for a family walk, unfortunately no dogs allowed.

Did this hike in just under 50 minutes taking a nice pace and stopping to enjoy the views. Did this hike with 6 week old baby and husband. Recommend bringing/wearing sunscreen. Beautiful view, breeze was wonderful and plenty of parking and bathrooms.

I’ve never walked on the cliffs before so this was a gorgeous perspective instead of the traditional beaches! The only disappointment was the bathrooms were locked up and when you have kids it makes it extremely challenging for them! Careful with little ones since you’re walking on high cliffs with very little edge! I will definitely be going back!!

This is such a pretty and relaxing walk! We walked it with sandals and that wasn’t the best idea, but there is beach access and we had a nice picnic by the water!
