Nice trail that is mostly shaded in redwoods. I recommend going clockwise for a more leisurely uphill climb. Parking is a bit limited at trail head, but free. Get there early for a spot. Only negative is that you pass through a busy area near the Mt Tam visitor center.

okay this trail is tough! there is not much shade all along the route but its worth it!! you have sea views through basically the whole hike and access to two other beaches along the way (well, a beach and a cove)- pirates cove and tennessee beach- def. check out tennessee beach along the way if you have time. We were complaining for half the hike but we agreed it was worth it for the beaches. If you can I def. recommend planning some time to hang out at the beaches. Muir beach is very nice and when we got back people had fires going on the beach and tents set up at 630p.
