Hikenites.la and skyhighhiking follow for weekly night hikes around La. We hiked on 7/9 around 11:30pm. Small group of 7, really nice trail, glimpse of many terrains, easy ascend to the top. Nice views all around. Hiked down the fire road. Easier but not much to enjoy. Really nice weather since its been really hot during the day. Saw some deer by where we parked. No mountain lion sightings. Safe all around.

Great moderate trail that goes through some brush and trees with a great reward at the top of a fantastic view of the Valley on one side and the ocean on the other side. I would do it again!

Beautiful hike. Single trail heading up with plenty of shade. Great views so take your time and look around. The caves at Eagle Rock are neat. We arrived at 8:30am on a Saturday and paid $10 for parking. Parking was wide open. When we returned around 12pm the parking was very full. Bathrooms are very clean.

Arrived at the trailhead at 815am and was able to snag a free parking spot on the road. Took the fire road up as it was before the sun got too hot. Little coverage, but beautiful views. Eagle Rock was empty, only one other gal at the top. Make sure you sign the journal in the ‘cave’! Took the Musch Trail down, which was only single track and quite overgrown. Only saw a few places with horse poop. Not too many people at all. Overall the trail was great, I would do it again. But where were the ocean views????

Loved it. If you take the left side first you get a beautiful view of the ocean at the top.

Beautiful hike with some nice little shady spot along the trail. We explored the caves just over the lip of Eagle Rock and found a cozy nook to laze in for a while.

Lovely and shaded for a lot of it and you’re rewarded with a gorgeous view in all directions! Convenient parking and clean bathroom facilities in the lot were also nice perks. Would definitely do this again!

Did a one night beginner backpack trip for my son’s Scout Troop. Camped at the trail camp.Easy hike even with the heat. Great views to Catalina if visibility allows. Pretty busy trail but to be expected for such a great payoff so close to town.

If you go clockwise, the first half of the trail is through shade, then you climb up to Eagle rock and hike back up down. If you take the fire road to complete the loop, the morning sun will most likely be on your back so it will be less demanding on the downhill hike.

Went here for my first backpacking experience. Loved it. Paid $10 for parking and $7 for the overnight stay at the parking lot machine, then hiked the mile up to the trail camp. There are about 8 spots, as well as 2 sinks and toilets which are clean as well. Half of the camping spots are a bit shaded, while the others are in sunlight most of the day. I went on a Tuesday night and there were many spots available. The hiking here is also amazing, especially the hike from Trippet Ranch to the trail camp, and then onward to Eagle Rock, where the views up top are amazing. The west side of the trail loop is rather ‘primitive’, which I love. On the other side of the loop is a fire road, with more foot traffic, and its more maintained. Many friendly hikers on the trails all around. I will definitely be back…

Amazing hike. The entire trail took about 2.5 hours with a few stops along the way. One half of the trail had wide cleared out pathways. The other half was rustic and very narrow, with lots of flora all around. The views are amazing, and parking was easy to find on the street. There were also tons of paid parking spots available for $10. Hardly anyone on the trail also, but I did go on a weekday.

This a a great trail. The views from eagle rock are spectacular. The ocean and The Valley - panoramic view. Went up through Musch trail and there are still lots of wildflowers and birds plus there is shade in parts going up. Came down the fire road which is wide. Luckily it was a bit overcast probably gets quite hot with full sun.
Do recommend this hike

I really enjoyed this hike. Great views and beautiful wild flowers. I recommend taking the fire road up and the Musch trail down to get the best views.

It's a good trail to get exposed to Santa Monica mountains. Catch the updraft, see the valley, Santa Monica, Catalina. Nice time.

We came in to this hike via Santa Ynez trailhead (Palisades via Vereda de la Montura), not Musch Trail. It was nice! Lots of streams to cross. Beautiful views. Steady incline. Eagle Rock was wonderful. Really enjoyed this hike.

Great hike with gorgeous views of the city from atop Eagle Rock. Nice, open areas, meadows, clean, plenty of free parking. Watch for bicyclists on the trail as sometimes, they zoom by pretty fast. Also watch for snakes and mountain lions - we've seen both. Our hike was almost 9 miles R/T but you can keep on going and going.

Great views from the top of Eagle Rock, though it's a bummer that people have defaced parts of it with graffiti. Not too strenuous.

just after a week of rain, the trail was a beautiful mossy green with great views up top. A good sweat too. The deer was a nice surprise. I appreciate a trail with bathrooms at the beginning with maps and decent markings to guide you.

Somewhat tricky, but so worth it! Beautiful rock with stunning 360 views from Malibu, to Topanga, to the Valley, and to Pacific Palisades. Perfect for a good workout with great rewards.

Malibu tent camping

I hope this post helps people find this campsite, since it was difficult for me.

It's right off the pacific coast highway about 5 miles. Take topanga canyon road then entrada way. Even once you get to the trail head/parking lot there still isn't too much info.

But if you start on the musch trail, it is paved at the beginning, then you'll go up 75-100 yards and then take a right on to a dirt hiking trail. This will take you up into the park a ways until you come to a T on the trail. On the right there is a sign that says "musch meadow trail." Go to the right for about 100 yards until you get to the bathrooms that serve the campground. The place is used for horses so you'll see a couple corrals by the sites. The whole hike is 1 mile from start to finish. Takes about 20 minutes.

The campsite is first come, first serve. There are 6 sites. The number of each site is on a flat number on each picnic table. $7 a night, no more than 3 nights. Bring exact change. Plus $10 for day use fee that is payed at the parking lot. The Rangers do check.

Perfect place to stay for cheap and still hit up the beach every day.
