OMG mosquito everywhere on this trail. We have to run trying to not get bite. Long shelve and repellent doesn’t work. The lake was nice at the end but won’t do this trail again.

Soooo many mosquitoes. We maybe had 1-2 hours of respite from them when we had a breeze, but otherwise they were always lingering and biting, even through long sleeves hiking shirts and pants. I cut my trip a day early because the mosquitoes made it far less enjoyable. You could probably find a trail with less mosquitoes, more breeze, less stagnant water sources.

The mosquitoes on this hike are BRUTAL. I’ve never experienced anything like it. They are EVERYWHERE including in woods and on dry granite surfaces. They are RAVENOUS. They will bite you while hiking through full sleeve clothes with repellant. I had at least 14 bites on each forearm, 20 on each shoulder, and 50 on my back (yes I counted). If getting bitten while hiking isn’t bad enough, filling water is a nightmare. Every water source is relatively stagnant so filling water means getting swarmed by mosquitoes. The views and the trail were good, but honestly NOT worth the mosquitoes. You can get equally good if not better views elsewhere without the mosquitoes. There is a reason backpacking permits are readily available for this trailhead. DO NOT DO IT!!

Lots of mosquitoes! Could not find the trail to the lake. Disappointed. Didn’t run into anyone in the trail but for mosquitoes.

We passed through this area on our way in and out of a larger loop that took us past Glen Aulin to McCabe Lake and eventually around and up the Grand Canyon of the Toulome. This portion of the trail was well maintained and relatively easy. We saw a number of families with young children packing in. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a nice day hike or overnighter.

This was my 7 year old daughter's first backpacking trip and I think it was the perfect trail. The trail is listed at 2.5 miles, but my GS said we walked 3 miles to Polly Dome lake. We wet over 4th of July weekend and I had applied for the permit 6 months out, but there were two guys camping at the lake that said they got a first come first serve permit that same day. As far as we could see, there were only three groups or couples camped at the lake. We found a site with a fire ring, but decided to have a joint campfire with the two guys camped near us. The water is clean and clear. We boiled the water before use. The mosquitoes were pretty bad and we had our only can of off malfunction on us. Had to puncture the can and pour onto tissues. I would do the hike again. GPS coordinated for lake are N 37 51'45.4 W 119 27'22.9

For a 2 day backpacking trip, this is an amazing option to consider. Since the lake is off-trail, it is in pristine condition :)
