This trail option is a butt-kicking direct ascent to the peak (1250 ft elevation) followed by a gorgeous descent through ocean mists into the beautiful backcountry. Beautiful in event direction and lots of variety. Lots of ways to explore this park, but this is delivers the "greatest hits" (including an American flag summit) with a solid workout.

Such an amazing hike! The incline on the way up and way down is no joke! I would recommend good hiking boots.

Not a bad hike, goes much faster than you think it should so I extended it a little bit. There are a TON of people on the way to the top but after you go down the backside of the mountain it completely clears out. Super over grown in the less populated parts

Peaceful trail. Getting to the top is always a challenge but adding the loop is a great way to recover. Currently overgrown and very dry so be mindful of current fire conditions. The return has a little elevation gain but beautiful views of the PCH.

Started in the dark at 5:30 am and went counterclockwise to the peak. The way up is steep for the first 0.7 miles but after that it is pretty easy going. Beautiful views from the top at sunrise and as you make your way around to the backside of the mountain the sun is slow to reach up over the other peaks and hit the valley. Significantly cooler on the backside and fairly overgrown in comparison to the ocean facing side. Tons of trail runners out in the morning and this is now one of my favorite hikes in SoCal. I will definitely be back for another sunrise.

This is my 3rd time doing this trail and it is still as awesome as it was prior. Though there are only a few places for shade there is a nice breeze when you’re in the canyon and valley. Chumash is the hardest portion which is the first .8(ish) of mile 1. Make sure to come early so you don’t do this in the heat! Bring water ☺️

I used to love this trail, we always added on the La Jolla loop trail too but it is so overgrown this year and we were covered with ticks. Counted over 80 on our clothes and sadly found one imbedded in my head once we got home after many tick checks and being covered head to toe with pants & shirts tucked in.

Great trail .. unfortunately no dogs, took my dog anyway made it tot he top and just my luck 2 cops/ rangers were at the top and said I couldn’t have dog as per the sign at the beginning of the trail.. they just advised they would follow me down to ensure I took dog down. Other than that great trail.. went back the following Saturday without dog and took the valley loop trial .. total hike 4.7 miles. Lots of over grown brush, wild flowers and great views.
