Start on the Smith Lake Trail, near the Gray Eagle Lodge, heading up toward Smith Lake; once you get about .5 miles, veer left, staying on Smith Lake Trail, then, within .1 mile, you come to the Mt Elwell trail, turning left here for the ascent of the North flank, which is forested most of the way up to the summit, and, can have snow still on the trail in to July on this side of the Mountain.
