Beautiful hike with a few redwood groves along the way, easy for conversation because it’s not too difficult

Really enjoyed this route! I see a variety of descriptions here, some of which don’t match up with my experience....

Middle Peak Fire Road; Lakeview; International; Upper Northside; Eldridge Grade Fire Road

If you go counterclockwise on the loop, it’s towards the easy end of “moderate” - I felt like the whole trail went down or level, but somehow I magically ended up where I started (meaning the climb was so subtle it didn’t really register). Steepest climb on my route was hike the highway back to my car in the east peak lot.

You do need to pay attention to your route though! There are several unmarked trails that can easily lead you off course. And in future, I’ll start from the International trailhead instead of the east peak lot/middle peak fire rd.

Most of the views everyone talks about are on the Eldridge Grade portion and at the trailheads/parking spots. Beautiful trek through madrone and oak woodlands to redwood groves at Collier Spring. I hiked it after a decent storm so there was a lot of downed limbs on the trail. And I had it entirely to myself for everything but the last mile when two mountain bikers passed by on the fire road.

This was a pretty okay trail. A little rocky in certain places but some nice views. It as about 10 degrees warmer there than the weather app said so dress in layers! Good thing is not a ton of traffic but the trails could have been marked better.

A decent hike with a variety of terrain and amazing panoramic views. The first 3 miles were relatively easy, and mostly shaded. The last two miles were a lot of elevation gain. The ground was often rocky and uneven for large areas of the path.

Depending on which way you go, this hike was hard. We got lost so we ended up doing about a six mile hike that was suppose to be four miles. Be sure to remember your route or use the all trails tracker. Overall, it was a great experience.

Fair to moderately complex hike with beautiful views. It earns the moderate complexity from loose gravel, large rocks, and some steep grades. However these are all intermittent and are easily traversed. I recommend a pair of trekking poles to navigate these areas more easily. Some of the views along this trail are absolutely stunning, and the change in scenery and microclimates as you hike are really fascinating. The fog adds an extra layer of beauty if you go before noon.

If you’re trying to access the trailhead from the Mount Tamalpais parking lot, you will need to walk down the road a little bit to find it. It is clearly marked with a trail marker. Note that you will need exact change ($8 cash, USD—foreign currency not excepted) to park in the parking lot. I tracked my hike with an app and it measured just over 5 miles. Not sure if it was me wandering around too much or if the measurement is off.

The trail wound sharply at spots with varied amounts of shade - some spots were very shady, and some spots were in the full sun on this clear, sunny, hot summer day. The foliage was a mix of medium-size and large trees with some brush and bushes mixed in. Encountered some redwood groves too. The view from the mid-peak is stunningly beautiful, as is the view from the nearby fire tower (not part of the trail). Make sure to buy a more detailed map at the visitor's center near the parking lot or use an app like Gaia. The free map from the visitor's center is not detailed enough and may lead you in the wrong direction. Overall we had a wonderful day!

Cold if you're in the mountains shade. There are much better hikes on Tam!

Great hike with great views. Not too many people when I hiked it. Sunset is the best.

So scenic and otherworldly because of fog that rolled in. We saw no one the whole time we were there. Fantastic memory!

Less travelled loop hike. Sections of the trail are very rocky which makes it somewhat uncomfortable to hike.

Fantastic views of the city and the bay from the east side of Mt. Tama. Easy hike.

Was a great hike, but we did end up turning the wrong way at a fork and had to walk an extra couple miles to get back on the loop. Pay attention and have fun! Beautiful views, and not very steep at all.

Best hike I've been on

Beautiful views as you drive up, the hike itself is nice but a bit claustrophobic at times. Hike is mostly shaded so good for hot days. My dog enjoyed it and we definitely had a nice workout.

I went in January so it was foggy, green and cool.

Go early in the morning. The first part of the hike is this almost comically steep, sunny stretch of dirt and rock which is pretty intense, and needlessly so if you can go earlier in the day when the sun doesn't bear down on you so much.

After that, it's relatively easy going (in my opinion). If you can make it through that, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the incredible views you get as you walk up to the top.
