Note: Part of this trail may be closed for maintenance. Explore this nook of wilderness that is near the UCSF campus, this greenbelt has a native garden and is a great respite from busy urban life of the city. This loop can be started from several locations, we suggest beginning along the Historic Trail at the intersection of 17th and Stanyan. Street parking is also available on Clarendon Avenue near Johnstone Drive. Starting along the Historic Trail, turn left at the wooden carving to get on the Fairy Gates Trail. Using the East Ridge Trail to reach the peak of Mt. Sutro, you will descend back down to the Historic Trail, which will wind you through the woods and back to the starting point.

One of my favorite hikes in SF. Super lush feels like you are in a jungle. Moderate foot traffic during COVID times

Great little hike in the city never knew SF had hiking trails with so much greenery. We ended up on Stanyan St on the way back down some trails lead to backyards of houses which was pretty cool.

Great trail to experience some nature in the middle of the city. However paths are very narrow for walkers and bikes.

Nice little “jungle” walk in the heart of the city! The views are rare because of the dense trees but we did get one great view of Marin and the GG bridge. Our route deviated a bit from the one on AllTrails but I think ours was prettier, staying off the roads. Watch out for bikes — trail is very narrow.

Trail is open! Entrance is a bit hard to find. Look for the wooden staircase next to 1235 stanyan street. Very shady, lots of lovely lush greenery.

Parts were closed - there was someone guarding the closed trail! Looked like maintenance maybe? Lots of lunch goers from the campus nearby at the summit, some nice benches to sit on up there in the sun. Good hike though!

Very nice walk and green sanctuary in the city! Part of the trail was closed due to the fact some trees were being cut down

Beautiful retreat within the bustle of San Francisco. Many winding trails through the eucalyptus trees - not great signage but it isn’t large enough to get truly lost.

I went at night. Seemed narrow at some points and very slippery from all the moister from the fog. Was pretty fun but probably better during the day.

Good hike to the summit. The switchbacks on Fairy Gate trail are fun. Just be careful of some mountain bikers... some were crashing down the trail without warning. The hike under the forest canopy is relaxing and cooling. At the summit there is a clearing with benches to sit and chill. Not much views though, except of Sutro Tower itself. Worth it, for the forest-in-the middle-of-the-city experience.

10/7/19 An easy and short trail. Wooden steps are at the beginning of the trail. Very dusty. Blackberry bushes have taken over the native plants. There are still some ripe berries and green ones at this time of year. If you are not wearing long pants your legs may get scratched up by the over-reaching berry branches.Trail restoration effort is on going and a portion of the fencing blocked the trail but it was easily cleared out of the way with not much effort. There were a few benches at the summit. There was not much of a view as some reviews had mentioned.

Great trail for a nice elevation gain and down slope at the end of the trail. Entrance to the trail has steps
