There's another hike called Mount Olympia Loop. I recommend that one over this out and back. East Trail is steep and slippery with small rocks; better to go up than down. Go down on Mount Olympia Road and Trail. It's longer but safer, less overgrown with vegetation, and less poison oak. Zippe Trail looks interesting and is another option, but looked a bit overgrown so I did not do it. Glad I did this on a cool day. 5/14/19

A beautiful hike! Definitely not for beginners or someone looking for something fast and easy. The hike was a constant uphill with beautiful views. Some pets were very rocky and loose but as long as you’re being careful shouldn’t be a problem.

The trail is very narrow and a little claustrophobic, but the views are very serene; much less crowded than the main trails, but poison oak everywhere. Last time I hiked on Mt Diablo, I saw mountain lion scat on a trail and smelled urine. Didn't feel safe enough to hike all the way up alone because of poor visibility (tall shrubs on either side)

Update: pretty sure a mountain lion lives in the cave about 1/2 of the way up. And there have been confirmed sightings of mountain lions on the olympia side.

Not for beginners. very steep and thin trail for most of the route. lots of poison oak and thorny grass. please wear full sleeved clothing if going for this hike. parts of the hike are partial shade.
