Hiking

So much of it was scrambling up unmarked trails, if that’s your thing

One of my favorite Griffith hikes! The first two miles of this hike are so much fun, highly recommend. If you follow the trail exactly as marked (counterclockwise!), you’ll link up to a lovely single track that breaks away from the fire road behind the old zoo ruins. This is by far the best part of the hike—beautiful vistas and setting, and it’s so secluded it feels like you have the entire park to yourself (even saw a large deer today!). At the end of the single track, you’ll meet up with the fire road again, which takes you to Mt. Bell, Taco Peak, and Mt. Hollywood. Incredible views of the city, observatory, and the entire expanse of Griffith Park. The last few miles are nice, very verdant and tons of eucalyptus trees, but they lack the incline challenge of the beginning of the hike. A mix of shady pockets and completely exposed stretches, so I’d recommend starting early on hot days and bringing sun protection. You can park at any one of the lots that lead up to the old zoo. A couple water fountains along the way (but bring plenty of your own), and facilities at the zoo ruins and also the base of Mt. Hollywood. Our moving time was 2:40 for this, but we spent a lot of time stopping to take pictures and also occasionally trying to find the trail (I think total time was over 4 hours). Would recommend budgeting a little extra time for this one. Watch out for occasional poison oak.

very hard to find the trail route when traveling counter clockwise. that said it was a lovely part of the park with plenty of trails and not too many people.

My dog was disappointed. The Taco/Bell trail is NOT what he was expecting. :-/
