Getting There

Amazing views of the Sierras and White Mountain. It is a short 6 miler with relatively minimal elevation gain at altitude. It involves some easy off-trail scrambling and a peak with nearly unsurpassed views in all of the White Mountains. You get incredible vistas of White Mountain and the Sierras, plus you have to hike a bit off-trail to reach the 13,040' summit. It takes you only 3/4 of a mile off the main trail/road to the top.

White Mountain Ranger Station (760) 873-2500

Drive north on the 395 to Big Pine. Turn east onto the 168 (signs for Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest) and follow it for 20 some miles into Westgard Pass. Take the turnoff for the ABPF and follow the road past Schulman Grove. It turns to gravel/dirt and while a high clearance isn't a necessity, the sixteen miles might seem like a million in a low to the ground passenger car. Follow the road to White Mountain and park at the locked gate. Here you follow the road up to White Mountain, and when you get past the observatory head off trail to the top of Barcroft. It is an easy scramble to the top, and you can find the easiest route for yourself. For the return, you can trace your route back to the observatory or head towards the road off trail to make it a loop.

We drove 5 hours from LA to the Locked Gate of the White Mountain Peak trail. We camped there one night and started to hike up at 7:00 am the next morning. It took me 3 hours and 12 minutes to reach the top. It was very touch for the last mile or so. The rocky road condition and no shade make the hike even more challenging. It is worth to hike once if you love to hike.
