Getting There

A beautiful trail that overlooks the Pacific. Climb up towards North Peak which can be very steep in sections, and bring your mountain bike if you want to cruise down on the way back. Overlook pristine coastal landscapes from a mountain top that's just a short drive from San Francisco. If you're looking for sun along the fog-bound San Francisco peninsula coastline, then Montara Mountain is the place to head for. Rising almost 2,000 feet above the beaches of Pacifica, here is where the sun often breaks through the clouds. Even when the sun continues to hide, there's still a chance that by the time you hike to the summit you'll be hiking above the clouds.

Parking area is off of Cabrillo Highway. There is camping and restrooms at Francis Beach Campground. Sweetwood Group Camp also has an accessible parking and a toilet.

This trail is about 20 miles south of San Francisco and 8 miles north of Half Moon Bay off of Highway 1.

More incline appears near the end of the trail as you head further up the mountain. Dog friendly hike! Got here at 745am and parking was easy to find (recommend you go early). Didn't know this was a trendy place to hike and had an overwhelming amount of people today. Some parts were narrow that you really can't socially distance and some folks rather have you take the initiative to move out of the way for them. Trail is shared by both bicyclists and hikers. You can find better places and inclines elsewhere unless you love being surrounded by people.

Of you go counter clockwise. Coming down is very steep and slippery. The trail is amazing with great views of ocean and city.

I tried hiking this trail yesterday but couldn’t get a parking spot. Beware that parking here is terrible!!

Hiking

Beautiful views all along. Starting in the clockwise direction gives a more intense workout. Beware of loose gravel. Risk of tripping in many places. Parking is hard. Get there early. We reached the trailhead at 8:40 and the parking lot was about 60% full.

One of my favourite hikes within an hour of SF. Definitely longer than 7 miles, but a variety of views and all so beautiful.

Beautiful hike with some steep, but totally worth-it, sections. It was pretty foggy when we went, but was still very cool in a somewhat spooky way. Will definitely be doing this hike again when it’s sunny, as I imagine it will be a completely different experience. Highly recommend, rain or shine!

HikingGreat!

I would say it is 4.5 stars only because the last quarter mile wasn’t too interesting and there was no view at the “peak”. Infact we couldn’t reach or find the end per the map. It was closed off. But otherwise a fantastic hike, good workout, wonderful views, especially on the way back, try to time it with sunset, you’ll not regret. Lots of people, difficult parking. It wasn’t windy at all. It’s mostly open but I assume it’s always on the cooler side even in summer?? But plan on a cool, cloudy day . Also, it’s almost 8 miles. And there are some steep sections in way back, we all tripped couple of times.

Great hike with amazing views! Came on a weekday and it was still pretty crowded with limited parking. Also note the entrance to the peak is closed so you can not go in. Other than that, I recommend this trail.

Steep climb up. Didn’t make it all the way to North Peak, because the entrance was blocked off. Nice trail back down with forestry area and benches. The intersection is unmarked, so it’s easy to miss.

HikingGreat!

Spectacular ocean views on a clear day. A narrow trail meanders along the coast before widening and beginning a steep ascent to the peak, passing through several microclimates. Some very steep descents on the loop back. Poles recommended.

HikingGreat!

It's quite the climb and a good workout. Views are brilliant, and I took a pretty hard detour via 911 trail (don't recommend, use the next cutback via Crack trail) to San Pedro Mountain and back to the parking lot via Two Mines, and Devil Slides historic trail. added a trip to the beach below as well. Total distance 9.6miles elevation gain of 2056ft, and about 5hrs

Perfect hike, sunny and ocean views. The only sad part was that the path was closed at the top and couldn’t summit. Also small parking lot, free of charge, tons of dogs (with leash) and families hiking.

Fantastic trail, amazing views of the ocean for the entire time. First half is continuous up, second is continuous downhill - not very steep. Lot of people around but everyone was good about masking up in proximity to other people.
