NOTE: There is ample parking at Ohlone College. This is the best place to park to access Mission Peak. Gradual route is a less-strenuous option for hiking to the top of the popular East Bay peak. Mission Peak gets throngs of hikers but only a few savvy trekkers take this route to the summit -- an eight-mile out-and-back that stretches out the 2,000-foot ascent to the summit (the most-popular route ascends a similar height in a 5.2-mile out-and-back). It starts from the parking lot at Ohlone College along Mission Boulevard in Fremont, California. Just one trail -- the aptly named Peak Trail -- curves and climbs its way to the 2,517-foot summit of Mission Peak. (From the parking lot, look for a sign pointing to Ohlone Trail). Abundant parking at Ohlone College on the weekend makes this trailhead a welcome alternative to the Stanford Avenue entrance, which fills quickly and forces hikers to park on side streets where car break-ins have been common over the years. There's also a bit more shade on this route compared to other trails to the summit. Impressive views of the Diablo Range and San Francisco Bay open up on the way up. Don't be surprised if you see deer and coyotes the ground and raptors and vultures soaring overhead. Best time to go: Springtime when the hills are green and the wildflowers are blooming. Winter's the next-best time, especially if the peak gets a dusting of snow. Fall is OK; summer's too hot during the day, but many hikers hit the summit at sunset and hike down after dark (best done under a full moon).

The Hike: Moderate hike with some tough sections at the beginning and closer to the peak. Starts off with a steep incline that continues for a mile and then it gives your breather for about 1/2 miles. Back to incline again but it isn't as bad until the last 3/4 mile to peak which is very steep. Coming down it's all downhill, which puts considerable stress on your knees so take that into your prep.

It's better to go early in the morning if you are going in summer. There is a unisex accessible rest room about 2.5 miles from the trailhead.

What to bring: I didn't need a jacket because it was too hot in July. Proper shoes are recommended because of gravel and down hill hike coming back. Take water and snacks.

Parking: Drive uphill passing open parking lots to find the parking garage closest to the trailhead. You can park for $4 all day (weekends too). Pay at station near elevator on 2nd floor.

Scenic hike, definitely challenging! Nice reward at the top! Make sure you put some toe protectors in your hiking shoes, lots of downhill on the way back.

July 4th climb was as good as it can . Lot of people and had to wait in line for around 20 - 30 min to get a photo on totem pole . Thats a reward to be enjoyed

Done this trail twice. First time left too late in the day and turned back due to heat. Second time started much earlier (8am) on a much cooler day. That last little bit of elevation kicked my butt in a good way, challenging but doable. Wear a hat with a brim and know there is very little of this trail that is shaded.

Great scenic views from verdant green hills. Exceedingly windy above tree line. Knocked off a star because so much of the trail needs maintenance. Toilet users remarked about disgusting condition.

Did it at sunset. Last segment a bit steep but extraordinarily beautiful ♥️

A fairly easy 7 mile hike, although we started early (7:30am) - in the heat it’s probably a moderate hike. Great views all through the hike. The biggest negative for me was the traffic - it is the most crowded trail I have ever been on. There was even a long line at the peak. Ok to visit if you are bagging peaks, but wouldn’t recommend otherwise.

Great hike- open fields and tree cover. Also a cave. Warning, I thought this was a Hard hike, not moderate. Cows and plenty of their left behind obstacles. Watch where you step in some parts!

The trail was very well maintained and the route is clearly defined not much guess work to it which is nice. The first half of the trail could be jogged or walked dependent on your preference all around a good hike with out being to difficult. The viewpoints are excellent depending on the weather and amount of overcast.

One of my favorite hikes. Be prepared for the WIND up there! And it’s STEEP. Do not underestimate this trail. :-) just a really good workout. Enjoyable. Benches and restrooms along the trail. The views up there will make you forget about the “meh” part of the trail. Worth your time! Expect 2-3 hours.

The 5 star rating is for the view and all the things that come around it. But me and my girls were physically unprepared and we were way too tired and winded that we went home depressed because al of our energy is gone lol!
