I'll add my .02¢ - this is 6 miles, not 4.3. I would add the views are great - except with the recent fires all over southern, central and northern CA, the blanket of lazy gray haze that is covering the area most certainly hinders the views you would get - in any direction. I can only imagine how nice and distant they would be if we weren't getting an awful lot of that smoke from the east and north. Regardless the hike itself is a good leg burner. Not too strenuous, but it definitely makes you work for those 3 miles up (and down.) At the top (at the picnic bench) you can extend the hike in numerous directions if you are feeling adventurous (which I was.) Definitely worth doing at least once.

Beautiful trail with fantatsic views of the canyons and ocean (and very few people along the way!). As others have written before, this is a 6 mile hike, not 4. It's all uphill for 3 miles and some of the hike is fairly steep (and then all downhill on the way back), so be prepared to work a bit for it. The trail itself is a normal trail for the first 20 min or so, then it opens on to a wide fire road climbing up to the top for the duration. There's a picnic table at the top to rest at before making your descent, which has great views. There are also a few other trails that meet up here, so you could easily tag onto a longer hike. Parking is super easy.

The first part of the Backbone Trail down to Hwy. 27 was just a boring fire road but on the other side was a beautiful single track. As usual, AllTrails kept stopping, total hike was over 22 miles per Strava!

Quiet trail without any crowds. There are a few moments of striking views and it's relatively lush for our ecosystem. There's a picnic table at the top and a bathroom at the entrance.

Closer to 6.5 miles, so be prepared. Solidly moderate hike. Great views at the top.

One of my fav hikes. Isolated and not many people on the trail. It's moderately hard, it's ALL incline. Once you get to the top, views are incredible. You know you made it when you see a picnic table by a big ol rock that you can sit on to take in views. I saw a snake so be careful, also lots of bees and bugs. Parking is scarce and also paid parking ($8 all day) and park rangers come by frequently to check that cars have paid.

Bright and sunny trail with few people. Need to pay in the parking lot, but plenty of space on a beautiful Saturday. Steady incline to the top with beautiful mountain and ocean vistas. Parts of the trail are sandy and a loose, which can be tricky when coming back down. Great view at the top with the option to extend the hike in either direction before heading back down. Make sure not to miss the turn from the large trail to the smaller one back to the parking lot.

Great trail with amazing views. Not much shade but there is a cool breeze from the ocean along the way. The ‘official’ trail ends at a clearing with a picnic table - but I just kept going for miles. Turned into an 8mile hike. Hardly anyone around.

Amazing hike, one of the best in Los Angeles area in my opinion. Lush forest, views of mountains and then ocean views at the top. Uphill on the way

Overall I will give this and easy rating instead of moderate. The first half mile is a narrow trail with lots of beautiful plant surrounding you. Very peaceful. Then come out on a wide fire road for the rest of the trail. I would definitely do again.

Really great trail with a nice vista at the end. Definitely a good steady climb and was a great workout with lots of variation in scenery. Did want to let everyone know to be extra cautious here, as my car was broken into while I was on the trail. The lock was busted apart and my wallet and purse stolen. So hide your things or take them with you! And to the people who robbed me, I had some important work notes in that bag. You have my address I’d love to get those back.

It was a good hike for an early day. Would not recommend doing this when it’s incredibly hot out since there’s not much shade once you get up top. Paid parking was a bummer.
