Tips

As of July 2020, due to COVID-19 measures, please practice social distancing measures and stay 6 feet from one another. Trails will also operate in one direction only. Find more info here: https://parks.smcgov.org/press-release/pillar-point-bluff-trails-reopen This trail takes you out to the Mavericks cliffs. The cliffs overlook the famous big wave surf spot, Mavericks. To see the surfers you will have to hike in winter during a big swell, and bring your binoculars because the wave breaks far out from shore. The trail begins with an uphill climb and then winds along the cliffs. Be sure not to pass the caution signs near the cliff's edge as the ground is soft and can give way. On the way back you have the option to continue the hike along the harbor towards the rock pier. Keep an eye out for seals and sea lions.

3 different parking options depending on where you would like to begin.

It can be cold here when the fog is out--dress in layers.

HikingGreat!

My wife and I liked the trail. We weren’t looking for a hard trail which this is not. We took our time and took in the scenery. We did follow the road at the end of the trail and it came out to Moss Beach Distillery where we had lunch before heading back. All in all a fun day.

This was a fun short hike along the bluffs above the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. We started at the parking lot to the FMR and headed to Pillar Point along the Pillar Point Bluffs Trail.

The views from the sea cliffs are great and its convenient to SF and the northern peninsula. Indeed, you can walk to a range of restaurants and bars. However, being in town, this area is crowded and it has an industrial feel to it with a the Naval Air Station, airport and adjacent housing and commercial areas. Parking is at a premium. It just doesn't compare well with the trails further down the coast.

Wish we were able to do this trail but the location the app provides doesn’t specify where to actually start the trail...I believe you need to go off to the right of the parking area where there’s signage about the habitat/wildlife? We decided to keep walking through the lot, past the porter potties, and down the path next to the water and ended up at a beach..with no other way to go. Literally a 5 min walk. Feel like we started at the end of the loop. Also the parking lot was packed when we got there around 3:30pm. Another parking lot down the road is available. Also within walking distance is HMB Distillery where we got a free tasting. The gin is good (very floral). Maybe we’ll come back to do the actual hike the right way

Incredible trail to do on a sunny day. You can look down from the cliff on groups of seals as they swim around in a kelp bed. So cute!

Loved this trail. We got to see seals poking their heads out of the water from the beach and had a great view from the cliff of a lot of them sunbathing on the rocks in the ocean. There was a cute California weasel that kept running across our path at one point. Just an overall easy, relaxing trail. Steadily busy on a Sunday morning, but peaceful. 10/10 would recommend. Definitely coming back.

family/kid friendly hike with breathtaking views of the ocean. A great learning experience for the little one because there was so much to see from birds and flowers to bumble bees and seals sunbathing on a rock. The uphill climb was doable with our jogger stroller, we saw another stroller (not a jogger) who had a little harder time but still make it! It was in the high 70's today with a breeze, I'd wear my flannel in some parts but soon take it off. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen since you won't find much shade on this trail! There are a few forks on the trail that ultimately lead to the same point, so that made it easier for us to social distance. Will be coming back, but next time we'll bring our dog since it's dog friendly! today's visit was not planned, but still had a blast!
