Amazing hike through giant redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants. In 1924, Laura Mahan, President of the local Save-the-Redwoods League and James Mahan, a prominent Eureka attorney, took a personal stand when they learned the forest around you was about to be logged. Through their direct actions operations were stopped. Pacific Lumber company agreed to continue paying taxes on this land until Save-the-Redwoods League purchased it six years later. One family's success to preserve these trees has allowed ALL of us the opportunity to enjoy this splendor today. The preservation of redwoods continues though the efforts of Save-the-Redwoods League, the California State Parks and many other individuals and agencies.

There are many side trails in this area, many of them small loops. In fact we went the wrong way and almost missed the plaque itself. But it's easy to find if you know which path to take by following this guide to POI 3. If it's been raining some of the paths pool up with water a few inches deep at points.

The trail seems blocked off by giant fallen trees that are impossible to get around if you try to approach from the trailhead off of Avenue of the Giants. It is, however, accessible and well marked if you get to it from Founder’s Grove. I recommend parking at Dyerville Loop Rd. parking lot and hiking both loops in one hike.

This trail is very patchy and lots or trees across the path. Very confusing, but also breathtaking.

Nice little loop. Easy walking. Parking isn’t plentiful, but the lot by founders grove has more spots, and the loops can be combined. Lots of mosquitoes so bring repellent.

This is the kind of trail that looks like it could take about 15 minutes to hike, yet will take about an hour as you gawk at the incredible spectacle of the Giant Redwoods. It's not so much of a hike as a stroll. I recommend starting at this trail, doing this loop, and then cutting over and doing the Founder's Tree loop, which is (as previously mentioned), well advertised. the reason I say you should include that part is that there is a very informative self-led interpretive guide provided. Slow down and explore this incredible place.

Use the app. It’s easy to get off track - we got a little lost. Also were bitten by mosquitos.

When you’re on the Avenue of the giants trailhead, make sure to walk straight to start the trail. You’ll see a big burned out root ball.

Do this! Everyone sticks to main trail so if you get lucky you may have this trail to yourself. And boy will you be glad - there are some incredible giants and forest here and better yet, total tranquility.

This beats Muir Woods any day! Next to know crowds and you don't have to take a long shuttle-ride to get there. The giant trees hush your footsteps and block out traffic sounds, making it a sanctuary of nature at its finest. There is no more peaceful place than among the giant redwoods.

My favorite grove. Went back to it 2 additional times.

Great grove of redwoods, lots of signs of old wildfires, some fallen trees. Rather easy to follow, but one portion - I think the part that connects to founders loop - was washed out and we had to double back to the Mahan Plaque loop. Informational plaque about the conservationists who stopped logging in the area in 1924

Beautiful flat trail just south of Founders trail. Enormous old growth giants. If you look closely to your left, you may find the albino redwood.
