This is the shortest route to Magee Peak and nearby Crater Peak in the Thousand Lake Wilderness on the Lassen National Forest. It is an easy-to-follow trail to Magee Peak, and slightly higher Crater Peak. The trail begins in a ponderosa pine forest, and continuously climbs to the peak through trees, and the brush zone. There is occasional blow down, but it is easy to get around these trees. This trail meets another trail climbing out of the crater. This trail is accessed from the Cypress or the Tamarack trailheads and passes through the lake portion of the wilderness.

That was quite a climb to the top! Beautiful views of Lassen Peak and Mount Shasta. Had to climb over a dozen trees on the way up but definitely worth while! Had a few small patches of snow near the top.

A moderately steep ascent from start to finish. Nice views of Lassen and Shasta. Trail has a fair number of trees that have fallen. Not much shade on top 1/2 of the hike.

We climbed the trail on a sunny and breezy day in late October. There were vestiges of snow from the first snow of the winter season a few days earlier. The trailhead is easy to access even with a highway vehicle, although the road is almost entirely gravel. The trail itself is continuously uphill and becomes steeper as one nears the rim of the crater. It is not difficult, although there is occasional blowdown. There are good views of the Sacramento River valley and the mountains to the west, as well as Lassen Peak about 16 miles to the SSE, especially as one enters the brush zone. Gray Cliff, adjacent to Magee Peak, is steep but not vertical. From the peak, one can see Mt. Shasta and other mountains in the vicinity, although nearby Burney Mountain is obscured by Crater Peak. The latter can be reached by traveling along the rim.
