I suggested an edit because Escondido Trail is currently closed. Also, by avoiding Proctor trail at the southern end, this trail can accommodate mountain bikers. The southern portion of this trail overlaps with the Lake Chabot Bike Loop and it gets a lot of bike traffic.

I would also suggest taking Brandon Trail instead of Grass Valley because it is more scenic and shaded. Grass Valley is very rutted from all the runoff and there is a muddy quagmire at one point that I would want to avoid.

If you want to follow the Bay Area Ridge Trail exclusively, then simply follow Brandon Trail all the way until you reach the golf course, then go through the golf course and follow the path that runs parallel to Redwood Road until you reach Proctor Gate. I took this route on my way back as I did a round trip.

If you're goal is to complete the entire Bay Area Ridge Trail, then you can link up with the following trails also available on All Trails. Nobody has yet created a trail for the missing link that goes from Proctor Gate to Rampage Peak then through Cull Canyon and links up with Don Castro (this is the Chabot to Garin Trail).

Nimitz Way Trail (Tilden Regional)
Seaview Trail (Tilden Regional)
Bay Area Ridge Trail: Lomas Cantadas to Skyline
Skyline Gate to Macdonald Gate
Bay Area Ridge Trail: Independent School to Five Canyons
