Lyons Dam is a 10.4 mile out and back trail located near Twain Harte, California that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, horses, and mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail.
I parked up at Lyons Rd, right by the dam.
Rode south to the bottom then back up to the dam. Then rode across the damn wall and around the dam, approximately 4 miles.
The first part of the ride going south is very easy and on a fire road. Going around the lake there are some ups and downs and rocks as well as smooth fire road. All in all it is an easy to moderate ride.
Total trip was about 15.5 miles, done in approximately 2 1/2 hours at and average speed of 8 mph. The ride is mostly shady and had easy access to the creek and lake.
Great low crowd hike. Great Lake. Fairly easy.
Rode my mountain bike here on Aug. 3, 2016. Great easy going trail. Rides along essentially a dirt road all the way to the dam. Very wide path and relatively flat. Not really a "mountain bike" ride, more of a pleasure ride that allows for looking around and enjoying the surroundings.
If you continue past the dam area and across the cattle grate, the path continues following around the dam and then starts tracking along the river. Path gets a little rougher at some points (more like 4x4 driving than dirt road). I took the path all the way to the point that it departs from the river (bends to the right - you can see it on the AllTrails map with GPS). Made for a nice long ride and the flowing river was nice too.
Overall I'll do this again when I'm looking for a relaxing ride with no technical riding whatsoever.
Trail was easy and beautiful. A pack of deer ran across our paths along the way was really cool. Wide path. Never an issue of getting lost. Great path for mountain biking of u choose to do so.
Had a great bicycle ride not to hard not to easy, I would do it again.
Water level is really high and the dam water was being released it was nice to see.
July 19, 2015. Trail is in great shape. Several patches of shade along the way shrouded in Redwoods, Pines, Firs and Dogwoods. Beautiful distant views. Nothing but peace and quiet. Zero poison oak. Best trail out of Twain Harte.
Hike along Ditch to Lyons Dam ...
This a nice walk. Of course it is the old rail road grade so it's flat and easy to traverse. No fear of getting lost on this one. The reward is reaching Lyons Lake which is very pretty. The trail is good for someone who is wanting a greater challenge in distance without something too rugged. As a matter of fact getting to the lake can be a little boring and then returning the same way you came can be more boring. But there are few 10 mile treks this close to civilization and it is worth exploring. This trail is perfect for a mountain bike ride even for kids. Bring water and food because it is a long way in and out.
Did the 2.4 mile hike down hill from SR. 108 park at closed scales and walk down. Gravel all the way with daughter on bike. Walk back up is a climb but flat wide rodeway.
Great hiking and fishing. Easy trail for all ages. Took our Great Dane pup and he had a great time. Beautiful views.
Easy trail, great for running, hiking, biking. Lake is owned by PG&E so no swimming. Swimming with caution in river above lake is permitted. In winter, lake freezes over toward inlet. Do NOT try to cross the ice. Fishing for planter Trout is great and watching the Eagles fly is spectacular. Overall a great trail. Access from South Fork Rd., HWY108, or Confidence/ Middle Fork Rd's...
