Facilities

Joshua Tree National Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. If you are entering on foot or bike the fee is $15 per person. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $55.

In the generally packed Joshua tree National Park, this trail is secluded and very peaceful. This hike is on the moderate side of difficult, there are short sections with some rapid ascent and decent, but overall most of the terrain is more mild. There is a nice variety of scenery throughout the hike, expansive views towards the east after the mine, lots of interesting flora and fauna throughout the hike. Clockwise, from the trailhead starting at the parking lot, is the easier direction. Go the opposite way for more challenge. Either way, do yourself a favor and do the entire loop. Most hikers go to mine and turned around, but they missed out on the best part of the hike. The access road is not paved, but any vehicle should be able to navigate it. Note: The main road to the trailhead may close during snowy weather.

My boyfriend and I hiked this trail this morning. Great hike up to the mine. It was difficult at times to decipher where exactly the trail was once we started our way up the mountain. We hiked some way past the mine but it seemed to veer off the map so we trekked it back the way we came. Got lost. Definitely user error. Beautiful trail, beautiful park.

Nice hike through varied scenery. Small parking lot keeps the crowds moderate, but can make it hard to find a spot on busy days (Thanksgiving for us.)

Great trail, easy to follow 99% of the time. There’s one desert area where it seems like their are multiple spin offs but it’s pretty easy to get your bearings. Cool stops along the way to look at abandoned equipment!

Great trail. Definitely want to check the weather before you go because it’s all sun. Lots of Joshua trees, yuccas, and chipmunks. Extra tip: Once you get to the mine scramble up the mountain to see a view of all of Joshua tree National Park.

Beautiful loop. We ran a lot of it since it was pretty flat.

Great trail, moderately challenging. Not very crowded, passed a few trail runners. Parking lot was near empty when I arrived around 7, but full and people waiting to park when I finished at 11. Beautiful day today.

Such a treat—beautiful and varied vistas around every turn. The mine are was very cool to explore, and loved the random stone fireplace in the middle of the hills that marks where someone must have once called home. The rock formations are amazing and the Joshua Tree “forest” was an unexpected bonus. We hiked mid-day and were grateful for the elevation that kept the temps down. We were glad to have our hiking poles. Not a necessity for sure, but a nice to have.

We do this hike every time we visit Joshua ... parking is limited so get there early. As others stated, We too did it counter clockwise. That backside though.... you’re up there!! But the views are breathtaking. Highly recommend experienced hikers.
