In the generally packed Joshua tree National Park, this trail is secluded and very peaceful. This hike is on the moderate side of difficult, there are short sections with some rapid ascent and decent, but overall most of the terrain is more mild. There is a nice variety of scenery throughout the hike, expansive views towards the east after the mine, lots of interesting flora and fauna throughout the hike. Clockwise, from the trailhead starting at the parking lot, is the easier direction. Go the opposite way for more challenge. Either way, do yourself a favor and do the entire loop. Most hikers go to mine and turned around, but they missed out on the best part of the hike. The access road is not paved, but any vehicle should be able to navigate it.

loved this trail! the plants were beautiful, the views were awesome, and the Joshua trees at the end were a great way to cap off the hike! and it was flat at the end. the park rangers in the morning were there to help get as many cars as possible into the small parking lot. I thought that was so kind of them. the park ranger suggested taking the trail up to the mine first - it worked great! oh and we saw a lot of droppings and asked the park ranger - and he said coyote!! loved this trail - would highly recommend!

Did the loop clockwise on Tuesday 11/12. Started around 1pm. Very enjoyable.

Lovely loop trail, went clockwise and highly recommend. It’s uphill to the old mine rather quickly, and then a smooth gradual descent the rest of the way back. Great hike to do early in the am before it’s too hot.

We didn't finish the whole loop due to time constraints, but we really loved it! This trail is beautiful, and the whole family enjoyed it.

Did the loop clockwise. Great views on the first half, was very enjoyable all the way around. Flat for the last quarter or so.

This was a beautiful hike (not too difficult) for an afternoon adventure. We went clockwise and enjoyed the descent after enjoying lunch and taking time to appreciate the vast scenery at the top of peak just past the mine. The mine was intriguing, but sad it was fenced off for vandalism protection. Including lunch, photos, nature admiration, mine exploration, we completed the hike in 3hr 45 min (6.9 miles). Note: lots of hikers out/back from mine, but we didn't see any hikers once past the mine, quiet solitude on a Sunday afternoon.

Great trail, well marked. Definitely do the loop clockwise or you will have to finish with a massive climb. Mine was cool and it’s just off the main trail. Well marked.

This was my first hike in Joshua Tree NP and it did not disappoint. There weren't as many rock formations as other hikes, but the historical features (mine and old camp) made up for it. Lots of Joshua trees on the latter half (did the loop clockwise). Overall fun and not too difficult hike.

Went up to old mine and up an extra 100 ft to great views of the mountains and the valley below.

Definitely a great work out, the mine was an added plus; make sure to do the full loop clockwise, couldn’t imagine how difficult it would be the other way around. The views were really nice.

We did out to the goldmine and back; took us about 1:20 to get out and an hour to get back. There are some spots with good views but there are better hikes in Joshua tree. The trail up to the gold mine is not marked, you’ll go up what looks almost like a riverbed towards the mine. Views are better going back than coming out. Solid, decently long hike.

Decent trail. There’s a steep incline right to start but otherwise pretty easy. The views are much nicer coming back. when you get to the mine it’s a little confusing how to get up to it but pretty cool once you’re up there. Not one of my faves in Joshua Tree but still some good landscape views.

Walked it clockwise which made for a very easy last third of the trail. The mine was interesting and walking the full trail was well worth it because the vistas past the mine were spectacular.

Overall not a bad trail. Very quiet if you do the full loop. We tracked this closer to 8 miles.

I forgot that I was planning to go clockwise.... counter clockwise is definitely the harder direction. Amazing views and really cool to see the mine.

Finished up this loop just as the sun was going down, most beautiful setting I have seen in Joshua Tree NP!
