I started the trail on the left hand side of the concessions when facing it from the parking lot. A lot of people start it from the other side but I think it was good to get the hot, dry part out of the way first (the side of the damn) and then end the hike with all the lake views! I went on a wednesday at 10:30a and it was not heavily hiked. I only saw a total of like 9 people by the end of it! So lots of me time. I biked alone with plenty of water (3L). Felt safe!

As Tuna Tony mentioned below the hike (loop) totals 5 miles from bait shop and back. I would agree it’s moderate in difficulty but may be hard for beginners or those just starting their fitness journey. You can always do half the hike and turn around because the loop from one side to the next is not identical in difficulty. I find the right side of the lake/trail along the park side is easier than the left side of the lake that runs along the dam. However, either trailhead you enter from presents its own set of nice steep ascending switchbacks on the last 0.5-0.7 miles at the end of the loop. If you’re a sunset hiker I suggest the left side trail, it’ll be both shade and sun but you’ll have more daylight left once you reach the other end of the lake. Depending on the time you set out, doing this hike in reverse will have you hiking back in the dark (some single tracks throughout). Proper footwear, excess water, and trekking poles come in handy.

Great beginner/moderate difficulty hike. It's a five mile loop, definitely not 2.5 miles as listed here...plan accordingly. I've hiked it a hundred or so times.

The Lake Poway Trail is an excellent hike for a beginner to advanced hiker/walker. The trail has hills, switchbacks, rocks, and dusty pathways that can be challenging at times. Other trails can be accessed via this one. Bring water and a hat as there isn’t any shade. Rabbits, squirrels, lizards, snakes, and coyotes, can be spotted depending upon the time of the day or season during your visit. There is parking ( fee required) and a concession stand at the lake.

A bit boring. Blue sky reserve trail is more shady.

Really enjoyable hike with our two big dogs. The wildflowers were outstanding. Wish the dogs had been able to dip in the water to cool off but it’s not allowed. Were told to watch out for rattlesnakes this time of year. Thankfully did not see any! I’d call the hike moderate to hard. Need to be in good shape.

Rainy morning doing the Waves for the Brave 5K. My 69 yo mom even had a great time today. Lots of wildflowers are blooming still.

Great fro mountain biking! Lots of climbing and downhill. Be careful with hikers. $10 parking fee for non-poway residents.

I would recommend this trail to anyone who is looking for great views and easy/short hike. There is no shade so starting early would be best. There is no street parking and parking lot charges $10.
