The Lake Merritt multi-use path circles the lake is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It is extremely family friendly, a great place for a dog walk and is often used by runners and cyclists. The lakeside park features a bird sanctuary, a boathouse, a great restaurant - Lake Chalet - with fabulous outdoor space, amphitheater, and a gorgeous botanical garden that includes a bonsai section, and a butterfly garden. At the boathouse, paddle boats can be rented hourly and daily for the whole family. The lake is a great place for picnics and gathering as there are many shady and sunny spots to relax. The park is also home to Fairyland, the first children’s amusement park (after which Disneyland was modeled). Fairyland is $12 for visitors ages 1-100 and is open Friday thru Sunday 10 AM - 4 PM. The majority of the path has restaurants, cafes and markets nearby and there are toilets located near the Oakland Courthouse.

Park off of Lakeshore Ave.

A nice walk around the lake! Really beautiful at night. Definitely people out on the walk, but there are fewer people at night than during the day.

I live about a mile from the lake and like to bike around it for two main reasons: 1. The walking path is crowded and hard to maintain physical distance and 2. There is an obvious bike lane around the whole lake. Also, it is generally flat so not too strenuous for days when I just want to get out for some air and nice scenery close by.

It’s on the heart of Oakland and it’s a beautiful and picture perfect lake . So many walkers and didn’t feel like COVID SIP . Weather was beautiful and it’s very crowded.

Love the view, not big fan of crowded. Not easy to build distance with another hiker.

I live in Oakland and it is my favorite walk. I do it almost daily. Great place for kids and dogs. It is a paved trail with lots of flowers and native plants. It’s got a bird sanctuary, a boathouse, a great restaurant - Lake Chalet - with fabulous outdoor space, ampitheater, and a gorgeous garden that includes a bonsai section, a water feature, and a butterfly garden. The lake is a popular spot for wedding pictures. There are lots of outdoor events during the summer. There are toilets near the Oakland Courthouse. But that’s it for toilet access. Water fountains near the boathouse, Lake Chalet restaurant, and near the toilets.

Central to the city. Great run or walk. Plenty of people always out and about. My dog loves it. Not quite 3.1 miles, closer to 2.5. Well lit at night

Great mixed use urban trail route. Nice views, and good for people spotting as well as bird spotting. No issues with security, during my daytime walks.

I love this walk because of all the people watching. Oakland has a very rich and diverse population. However, I especially love it for running, it's the perfect 5K run if you are having difficulties and want to avoid hills. Plus you will meet a lot of other runners and it motivates me to see others run.

I jog Lake Merritt on a weekly basis. I love this place as an Oakland native. You can have a picnic, bbq, take a nice walk, and you can rent boats as well. Family, and pet friendly.

Another go to spot of mine. It’s a popular location so it’s usually heavily trafficked. It’s an easy flat 3 plus miles. You can also intensify your workout by running or walking the stairs closer to the lakeshore area. It’s great especially if you want to be in the sun.

Not really a hike, but an urban stroll on a paved path along the lake. It’s beautiful, well suited to a brisk walk or jog with your fur-baby. Dogs must be kept on leash and if you’ve got a bird loving dog FYI there are lots of geese and lake birds. Watch out for bikes and scooters on path.

I’ve lived in the Bay Area for 10 years and have never walked the Lake Merritt perimeter...until yesterday. Such a fun and easy loop. Lots of the community and locals enjoying the area - really enjoyed the walk. Went with two friends and we completed it in just under an hour.

This is a easy strolling path around a lake in downtown Oakland. There are several spots to stop and sit and many dogs, joggers, and scooters.
