NOTE: As of 3/15/19, users have reported that this trailhead is closed. For more info, please see https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/parks-and-recreation/ranger-service This loop hike lies within the Laguna Lake Open Space portion of Laguna Lake Park in the city of San Luis Obispo. The park also features developed facilities outside of the open space, including picnic areas, a playground, and an off-leash dog park. The open space encompasses 360 of the park's 375 acres. The route starts from the Laguna Lake Trailhead at the far end of the park's entrance road. There are restrooms and a small parking lot here. This is also the location of the off-leash dog park, and is heavily used by local pet owners. There is no sign formally marking the start of the trail, but an obvious path leads northwest away from the parking lot. After a few hundred yards, there is a sign marking the boundary of the open space, and a wooden gate. Just past the gate, go right on an unmarked trail, avoiding the more obvious path that continues straight. This is the Laguna Lake Upper Loop Trail. The trail gradually rises along the south slope of Peak 568', aiming generally north.

Laguna Lake Park is very popular, especially on weekends. The small parking lot at the trailhead fills up rapidly, but overflow parking is available nearby. There are no parking fees or permits. Because the trailhead is co-located with the off-leash dog park, expect to see a lot of unleashed dogs. This is an excellent hike for children, especially toddlers. There is also a small children's playground near the trailhead.

This is based on my preference, but the trail is fair. It’s far from a shady and pleasant environment. I saw a few cyclists, and it seemed better for biking activities.

Easy trail, lots of wind. Only ran into one other person on the trail itself though there were people in the dog park and at lakeside. Nice for a quick walk.

Got a late start on the hike. Saw that it was short and easy. And it was. At least the lake loop. The upper part of the loop was a lot more challenging with a nice view of the lake on one side and the town on the other. If you’re a beginner or an intermediate level hiker this Trail has something for everyone. I did both the upper and lower loops in under 80 minutes.

Super easy but super muddy and about 3 inches of water on the lakeside portion. We parked at the dog park and my son was easily able to ride his bike on the dg path. Gorgeous views but windy. As we headed left thru a wood gate we went from a nice path to marsh wet lands. Luckily we didn’t care were able to embrace water up to my sons ankles on the lakeside way back. They should put a small boardwalk over the marshland part of the trail. Still fun and something to remember.

Trail is in poor shape, cut up by horse riding I suspect and allowed to harden. Very difficult to walk/run over.

Oh my. It had rained sometime during the night, but the trail and surrounding scenery were wonderful! I loved being near the lake with the birds in and above.
