One of the North Coast’s most spectacular views at 600 feet above the river mouth. Scope Bald Eagle, Osprey, American Kestrel, Common and Pacific Loon, Red-necked and Western Grebe, Surf Scoter, and Black-legged Kittiwake. Common Murre and Pigeon Guillemot are seen in breeding season. Hillside below overlook is alive in spring with Allen’s Hummingbird, Wrentit, and Orange-crowned Warbler. May to June watch for migrating Black Swift among Vaux’s Swift and swallows. A steep trail near the parking lot entrance winds down the bluff to a viewing platform, best place to spot seals, sea lions, and whales. The ancestral territory of the Yurok people (People of the Salmon) extends from the mouth 40 miles upriver. They are the largest California tribe with continuous occupancy of their aboriginal lands and still maintain sovereign rights to fish for salmon in traditional ways.

Was a bit steep and overgrown in places but a beautiful view all the way down.

Wouldn’t rate this as easy and some spots are narrow and a bit tricky. Beautiful views and not crowded. Bring a picnic, there are tables near the parking area.

This was a short and sweet hike - absolutely beautiful ocean views, with a steep climb down and back up. The upper parking lot had great views as well, but at the viewing platform at the end of the hike we could see more of the rocky cliffs, and more seals swimming. We would do it again if we were in the area again.

This leads to a beautiful outlook. I would rate this moderately difficult as there is a significant descent to the outlook and ascent back to the trailhead. It took us around 30 minutes round trip.

this is a great little hike to see the ocean hand if it's not foggy the river. steep up and down for less than a mile. but when you get to the Overlook the stairs to climb up are in very bad shape. regardless well worth the hike.

Drove up here with my wife and did this 4 years ago and saw all the salmon fishermen on the spit and went and bought a license and tackle. Took home 3 salmon 25 lbs or so each in 2 hrs of fishing..... Laws have changed so much since that it will never happen again again in my lifetime ... So bad already the ocean here was closed for salmon this year.

Found this a couple of years ago showing my wife the Yurok's salmon netting during the peak of the season. There were also whale watching volunteers at the parking lot as well. Interesting high views of the river and ocean.
