Tips

One of San Diego's most popular hikes, the Iron Mountain Trail leads to the second highest peak in Poway and offers great views of Northern San Diego County. On a clear day hikers can see Mt. Woodson as well as the Catalina Islands. The hike takes place just west of the Boulder Oaks Preserve and the Iron Mountain trailhead is accessed just south of the intersection of Poway Road and CA - 67. There is no shade on this hike so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Mountain biking and horseback riding are permitted along the trail. Visitors can also access the Wildwood Mountain and Ellie Lane hiking trails from the Iron Mountain trailhead.

Llevar gorra, calzado de senderismo y protector solar puesto que no hay mucha sombra.

This was my first time on this trail and I loved it. It was a good workout but not too difficult. The views on the way up were lovely, green rolling hills and beautiful wildflowers. We started at 6:30am but I’d recommend starting earlier. It was packed! Due to Covid, most people were respectful and wearing masks. The trail is a bit narrow so pulling off to the side for other hikers is often necessary. At the summit, there are a lot of flies in one area for some reason. But they are easily avoidable and not a big deal at all. I highly recommend this hike.

This trail is popular! Not much shade other then the beginning. The grade is low and easy to hike once again only half the people were wearing masks. Would do this again if I needed an easy peak.

Be super super EARLY for sure. Love the intensity but not the heat! Overall...It was an enjoyable hike, even with sprained ankle coming back with 2.5 miles to go...!

Definitely challenging when doing it under 85⁰ weather but worth the view! There's no shade so make sure to wear sunscreen or a hat. I'd hike this again but not in hot weather.

No shade definitely cover up or wear sunscreen. Bring sturdy shoes but low tops are fine as well. Easy hike nothing crazy, no climbing at all. Switch backs towards the top. HAVE FUN!

Definitely arrive as early as possible if summer/hot days. Not “easy” but challenging enough, I’d say moderate + because of some of the rocky terrain. Very enjoyable views. Very busy/popular trail.
