Perfect for a long bike ride. Being point to point, I would suggest using BART if you plan to do the whole trail. You can do a shorter version of the Iron Horse trail by riding (or running) from the Dublin station to the Pleasant Hill station; it's about 18-19 miles. If you want to do the whole thing, you can bike 3 miles southeast from the Dublin station to the start of the trail. At the end of the trail, the Concord station is about 2 miles away. That's what I ended up doing.

The trail is well marked, although I did miss the turn after Monument Blvd. in Pleasant Hill and continued going straight on another bike path. There is heavy foot traffic in Danville and moderate to the north and south. The first couple of miles in Pleasanton and the last few miles in Concord have very light foot traffic.

I requested an edit to remove hiking and mountain biking from the trail activities. If you want to do that, go to nearby Las Trampas Wilderness. :)

Not a place to hike but a pretty good paved path to ride. It hooks into the canal trail in Concord. If you combine it with the Canal trail and Crow Canyon and Norris Canyon roads its a very nice ride

This is a paved suburban walkway, even though they call it a trail. I walk it all the time, but it's not a "hiking trail." Bring your stroller.
