Stunning view from the Mt. Mcabee Overlook, the trail connects the Park Headquarters to the Skyline to the Sea Trail.

We did the hike up to Mt. McAbee viewpoint. It was okay, but the views weren't extraordinary.

Bring water, long trail - Even if you're fit, it's still a long hike. You can see SOME fantastic views and the trees are absolutely beautiful.

More challenging way to get to berry creek falls. The view is great at the top of mountains if it there's no fog over the ocean. Bring a lot of water.

Be careful of rattlesnakes, we ran across one sunbathing on the trail. Nice hike, but not my favorite way to get to the falls. I prefer taking the sunset rail which drops you right into the falls and to berry creek trail. With the Howard king trail you have to pass the berry creek trail and climb up to the falls and then go back down to berry creek trail.

The park has lots beautiful red trees, water falls, lots of mosquitos though.

With Skyline-to-the-Sea partially washed out, Howard King trail was the detour. It was not too challenging climbing to Mt. McAbee overlook, but the steep descent to Skyline-to-the-Sea should be taken carefully and slowly. Mt. McAbee overlook is an amazing view and a perfect place to break for lunch and relax before the descent.

Took this trail yesterday as a detour off the Skyline to the Sea trail, it was by far the most difficult section. Currently it's the only way to access Berry Creek Falls (only the lower section is open), a grueling 14 miles roundtrip from Big Basin HQ. It's almost entirely steep up and downhill, so give yourself plenty of time, bring water, and trekking polls go a long way. There are some beautiful views of the mountains and ocean, and the Falls make the trip worthwhile.

Not your typical Redwood hike with meandering creeks, ferns, sorrel and the like, but still a great trail. Howard King Trail is all about the beautiful views of the surrounding hills and a vista point with a bench looking out to Waddell Beach. On a clear day, you can actually see the waves crashing! With the popular Berry Creek Falls loop closed, this is the only way to see Berry Creek Falls without breaking the rules. The trail is well-marked with signs saying "Berry Creek Falls Detour". This descent from the overlook to the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail junction is a large change in elevation, and it is quite grueling ascending those switchbacks on the return trip.

The only way to currently to get to berry creek falls. Many trails have been completely destroyed from the rains this year. Not a bad detour of a trail however.

This beautiful trail has an amazing view to the sea as well as to Berry Creek falls. As I walked, I was constantly mesmerized by the view.
