I guess that incline was moderate. :) I’m not in great shape so had to stop 3 or 4 times to rest. Good thing is after the incline it’s a nice slow descent. You can make it an easy out and back if you skip the incline part.

HikingGreat!Off trail

We did harder way (steep off road) up and easy way (fire road) down. You can just follow the fire road all the way for an easy route! There will be still a good elevation gain, great work out. There will be a lot of people there (very popular trail), I encourage you to start early. We started 5:30am, there were already around 20 cars at the trailhead. There are plenty of place to park on the side of the road though! To be noted; it is very exposed trail. But if you go early, there will be no problem. We finished around 9am, but it was very comfortable hike all the way!

If you do the loop going clockwise prepare for a very difficult upward steep climb. I thought I was fit but that climb was very hard. There are a TON of little flies that will follow you so wear covering clothes and bug spray to avoid the annoyance. There is a beautiful view at the top that makes it worth it. After the climb the rest of the trail is down is beautiful and more shady which is a great cool down after the climb.

It was a good workout! Just be really careful going up and use both hands if needed.

If you do the loop, make sure your shoes have good traction. I felt twice, watch out!

Starts on paved road. If you take the trail clockwise you’ll get all the incline very quickly. It’s VERY steep. Personally prefer to go up that instead of scoot down it. Or go counter clockwise for a more steady incline on the fire road and turn around as desired. Started at 7am and the sun got us warm quickly. Bring a hat and sunscreen - minimal shade especially as the day gets later.

CCW direction is OK, although steep segment is very dangerous with slippery sand.

I (most) went up the full steep path, and came down the easy way (because the steep path back down is honestly too loose and gravel-y for me). Oh, I also carry a 30# pack because I’m training for Mt. Whitney (which I know is a BEAST!)

First to Review

The hardest part of this trail is the completely uncovered and steepest path, but if you don’t have 2-3 hours to spare, you can cut that in half and go up the steep way and turn back (or right) when you hit the water tower. I don’t go back down the same way because after the crazy fires of 2017 that tested these actual fire roads, all the construction vehicles that went up the steep path loosened all the gravel so much (for me at least) that I prefer to take it easier (albeit slower and longer in distance) down. Oh, and it’s never truly crowded here except on the weekends, BUT it’s not even that bad when it is “crowded.” Toodles ^_^
