It was more of a dirt road than trail, with vehicle traffic. There were several side routes that are not mapped causing some confusion about direction. There were some nice views. Oct 1 was a bit too early for any fall color.

We intended to do the 12 mile Burnside Lake rd but showed up late then got stuck in the snow for an hour. We decided to hike Hope Valley. Upon arrival I was disappointed that this was a groomed trail. Who wants to snowshoe on hard pack? Not me. Anyway, we headed up the road and split off to the Hope Valley trail. Lucky for us no one had cut the trail yet so we had fresh powder most of the way.
We hit our GPS destination and was a little confused about the why the trail ended where it did. No Valley to be seen from the end point.
Some stream crossings you need to watch out for. It was a good day with very few people. Low traffic all though they have shoe and ski available for rent at the parking area.

You have to go here in the fall to enjoy the colors. Beautiful! Cross country ski here in winter. Great mountain views

There are so many trails in this area that don't seem to be in the database... Red Lake Trail (hiking/snowshoe), Hope Valley trails (snowshoe), Thunder Mountain (hiking), Round Top Mountain (hiking)... All of varying length and difficulty, all with great views. Never have seen very many people on the trails either.

Hiking into the Mokelumne Wilderness begins from the trail head at Carson Pass. Nicely groomed and maintained trails. Always encounter friendly hikers and families out on this trail. First stop, Frog lake 1.0 miles up. Incredible vista overlooking Hope Valley at this point. Next 1.5 miles up to Lake Winnemucca, with the backdrop of one very majestic rock wall jutting up from the water and spiring to the sky! Onto Round Top Lake, 1.0 miles. Make the 8 miles loop and descend down onto Woods Lake, a little piece of Heaven on earth!! Birding, wildflowers, amazing!!!! Be prepared for inclement weather. Afternoon thunder heads build up. Could be a light shower, or more!!

Favorite of all trails! Bursting with wildflowers, wildlife, lakes, and those incredible thunder heads that build every hot summer afternoon...enjoy the refreshing showers and thunderous echos through this grand rugged Alpine region.
