Getting There

Visitors should use the Brush Canyon Trail from Canyon Drive, two blocks to the east of Beachwood Drive off Franklin, or Griffith Observatory. Canyon has a parking lot, sidewalks, trash cans, and facilities for visitors. Parking is limited and fills up quickly at Griffith Park so using the DASH Observatory shuttle is recommended. This shuttle runs every 15 to 20 minutes between 10 AM to 10 PM and is wheelchair accessible. Due to multiple portions of the trail having a steep grade above 12%, this trail is not considered wheelchair or stroller friendly, although it may be for some users. This is a great hike if visiting or new in town with excellent views of the Hollywood sign. At the top is a 360 degree view behind the famous sign.

Park along N Beachwood Dr.

To get to the hike, drive up Beachwood Drive all the way until it ends and you'll see a dirt parking area at the bottom of the hike with a path leading up. You'll follow it up to the left. Make sure to follow posted signs to not end up at the Sunset Ranch - unless you want to take a guided horseback ride ;). Also note when you reach the old paved road you can go down to the left and around to get a close view of the front of the sign (you'll see a locked gate at the end). Then backtrack to then go up (earlier to the right) to follow the road up to the top to get a view from behind the sign. At the top you'll find yourself behind a gate with the sign just feet in front of you, around to the left off the road is a small dirt trail to the very top where you'll get the full 360 degree view. Shorts and short sleeves are fine as the trail is fairly open and free of plants and shrubs. Even though I've seen people do this hike in flip flops I suggest athletic or hiking shoes as it's a dirt trail and can be a bit steep in some areas. There's not a lot of shade so sunglasses and/or a hat are nice.

Head northward on Hwy 101, right on N Beachwood Dr. When you see Ledgewood Dr the next intersection will be Belden Dr and from there is around 250 feet away on the right side.

Easy, long hike. Not much shade. Pretty heavily trafficked on a Saturday morning but parking was available close to the trailhead at 9:00am. Port-a-potties available as well! Really enjoyed it!

Fun hike, but would probably only do it once. Wide open, no shade. Bring lots or water

Nice trail system. Google says the trailhead opens at 8, but it’s actually open Sunrise to Sunset. I arrived at 7:30 and there were some people on their way down already, so that would have been good to know. Great views and well kept trails all the way to the Wisdom Tree. I had read the trail to the tree was closed, but there were no gates or signs stating as such on the trail. Mask usage was around 100% for the early morning crew, I’d say it was around 10% for the people starting up at 10am.

As crowded as you expect, don’t underestimate LA sun/heat on a hike like this, 0 shade, good views of la, less crowds than near observatory, pretty neat to see behind Hollywood sign

Mostly wide open path. Considerable smog until about half way up to the Hollywood sign. Hike to the sign is almost entirely up hill.

Hiking

If you’re unfamiliar with this hike, a couple of notes might be helpful. There are viewpoints both above and below the sign. Both are accessible from Brush Canyon Park. Going to both viewpoints will be about 7 miles roundtrip. The entire hike is on fire road/access roads. The first 2 miles are packed dirt, and the rest is broken asphalt. There are two sections with decent incline: the first 2 miles, and the last mile to the Mt. Lee Summit behind the sign. The rest is fairly gentle or level. You will likely encounter horses (and evidence of horses). Arrive early in the day to secure parking. We thought it was busy on a Friday... I hear that weekends can get very busy. There were still parking spaces available on Friday at 9am, but some people had already started parking on the street. There are two portapotties in the first parking lot that you come to... the second lot is closer to the trailhead, but if you have to walk back to the portapotties, then you might as well park in the first lot. Be mindful of the temperature and time of day... we went on a fairly cool morning in March, but I can only imagine how hot it might get in the summer with no shade and so much asphalt. Great views of Hollywood, DTLA, and Burbank. Enjoy!

HikingGreat!

Trail was open, easy to bring dogs, and surprisingly less crowded than I would have thought. Definitely go during off hours, we got there around 4:30pm and it was perfect.

WalkingGreat!

some shaded areas, up hill most of the time good decent work out. They close the gates around 7:15ish as they put on the gate(by sunset) so if you want to see the sunset I would say find a different path up. Went on a Wednesday not many people. Took me about 2hrs 32min.

Used to take the route via beachwood canyon. This hike used to be half the length to get to the Hollywood sign now that beach wood is closed off canyon is the only way to go and it is definitely much harder and steeper especially but still a good hike.

Very crowded but almost everyone had on their mask and was respectful. The horse shit all over the trail was why I took off a star. Bike riders on the trail when it is not allowed. Parking was difficult.

Great trail! Arrived by 8am and tons of cars parked, but you will be able to find a spot in the housing so don’t worry. Steady Incline the whole way up, dog friendly and a decent amount of people but not enough to deter you away bc the paths are so wide.
