Getting There

Note: This trail was temporarily closed due to COVID-19 but has now been reopened. As of August 2020, masks and social distancing are still required. Visitors should use the Brush Canyon Trail from Canyon Drive, 2 blocks to the east of Beachwood Drive off Franklin, or Griffith Observatory. Canyon has a parking lot, sidewalks, trash cans, and facilities for visitors. Parking is limited and fills up quickly at Griffith Park so using the DASH Observatory shuttle is recommended. This shuttle runs every 15 to 20 minutes between 10 AM to 10 PM and is wheelchair accessible. Due to multiple portions of the trail having a steep grade above 12%, this trail is not considered wheelchair or stroller friendly, although it may be for some users. This is a great hike if you are visiting or new in town with excellent views of the Hollywood sign. At the top is a 360 degree view behind the famous sign.

Park along N Beachwood Dr.

To get to the hike, drive up Beachwood Drive all the way until it ends and you'll see a dirt parking area at the bottom of the hike with a path leading up. You'll follow it up to the left. Make sure to follow posted signs to not end up at the Sunset Ranch - unless you want to take a guided horseback ride ;). Also note when you reach the old paved road you can go down to the left and around to get a close view of the front of the sign (you'll see a locked gate at the end). Then backtrack to then go up (earlier to the right) to follow the road up to the top to get a view from behind the sign. At the top you'll find yourself behind a gate with the sign just feet in front of you, around to the left off the road is a small dirt trail to the very top where you'll get the full 360 degree view. Shorts and short sleeves are fine as the trail is fairly open and free of plants and shrubs. Even though I've seen people do this hike in flip flops I suggest athletic or hiking shoes as it's a dirt trail and can be a bit steep in some areas. There's not a lot of shade so sunglasses and/or a hat are nice.

Head northward on Hwy 101, right on N Beachwood Dr. When you see Ledgewood Dr the next intersection will be Belden Dr and from there is around 250 feet away on the right side.

I’m out of shape with a cracked vertebrae so that made it a little hard at times, but it was definitely worth the trek.

Did this hike on August 29 with my friend. We are both fit and active and in our early 30s. Lots of other people on this trail as well as some horses. People were pretty good about wearing masks. Pretty much on constant incline, with some nice views. Took us 2:15 to go all the way to the top and back for a total of 6 miles. Nice views from behind the Hollywood sign with the city in the background.

Trail was great. We did a day trip from Fresno and hiked all the way to the back of the sign. My 14 year old son did great. It was a little more then we expected but when we were done we hit 8 miles. Make sure you have lots of sunscreen and water.

Please do not take small children or small dogs on this hike! It is a great trail with great views, but I saw kids saying they couldn’t go any further and dogs panting uncontrollably. This hike has a great view of the city and the Hollywood sign. It also has different areas to venture off to such as Mt. Lee Summit and the Griffith Observatory. Highly recommended this trail!

Amazing views of both the city and the valley on the backside, connects to other trails, entirely exposed to sun, wide road path the entire way. Sunset views are the best bc city lights begin to twinkle.

Really nice local trail. Took us around 3hrs to do both front of the sign and the back. Stop by the gelsons at the bottom of the hill to get cold drinks afterwards and use the restrooms.

Overall happy we did this hike. It was more challenging than I expected, but that may be because our muscles are slowly atrophying from quarantine. Lots of people, some entertaining. Parking was very full by 9 am and cars were all the way down the street. No shade, wear sunscreen, pee before you get on the trail in the park cause there’s no cover.

The trail was excellent. From Canyon drive, about 2 miles is fire road, and the last 1-1.5 to the summit is asphalt. The view is AMAZING so make sure to go up Mt. Lee to the back of the sign. Heavily trafficked, even for a Friday morning, so best to go on a weekday and early.

Loved this trail, The path is dusty and there is a stable close by with folks horseback riding on the trail. There was sufficient parking for a weekday. Also, not many hikers and most wore masks or practiced social distancing. Either way, the trail is wide enough to distance. The view of the city wasn’t great because it was a bit cloudy but I could only imagine how beautiful it would be, with clear skies. The hike to the better view of the sign is 2.3 miles, a bit of an incline. Worth it!
