Great drive down from High Point Lookout Tower. Very easy drive did it in 2wd 99% of the way. Some nice little areas where you could safely hit 20mph. Amazing fees of the valley! Saw two horned frogs which was rad.

Open! Awesome trail, but you can’t get to it from the Palomar Divide Trail or the Palomar Observatory. Only from the Highway 79.

trail was open 7/9/19. really fun and moderate trail. lots of offshoots for those who want more technical stuff. can do most of it in 2wd, but will need clearance for rocks and ruts.

Easy road when dry and maintained, did it in 2 wheel drive the whole time. Fire Tower crew had a Subaru and they had no issues getting up to man the tower. This road has very sharp turns, so larger full size trucks beware as you may have to reverse in many spots to readjust. As mentioned already there is at least 1 gate, and if open will allow you to continue into Palomar Divide Road and then you can make a full loop which will take you about another 10-14 miles further and back down to the highway. It's a nice fire road and I like it when the gate is open as it's a drive through, rather than a up and back. The gates to the observatory are always closed it seems, so no continuation through there. The last 4 trips they have always been closed. There are some small spurs off this road (and 2 mines off Palomar Divide) but they are gated and fenced or on private property. Kind of sucks now that exploring and adventuring is limited, but if you're looking for an easy day run from the San Diego area with some nice views this is a great road to get your truck a little dusty and see some good views. Be sure to call ahead of time to check road status, if it's been dry it should be open, but they close them off after the rains and for a few weeks thereafter for controlled burns. I talked to the Forest Service folks at the tower for a while to see how much longer this season it would be open.

Started out on High Point Truck Trail and hoped to access Palomar Divide Road. Gate was closed a few miles in. Gate was also closed from the other entry point at Palomar Divide road. Call Cleveland Natl' Forest Palomar Ranger District 760-788-0250 before you attempt the trip.
