Follow signs to Castle Lake from the town of Mt Shasta. From Central Mt Shasta go west on Lake St, turn south on S Old Stage, Veer right at WA Barr Rd, cross Box Canyon Dam (Lake Siskiyou), turn left on the Castle Lake road shortly after the dam and follow the pavement to its end at Castle Lake.

Great trail but there’s a lack of signs as to the designated trail. Just keep the AllTrails app open and you’ll be fine. Heart lake is frozen over. Great views. Can’t believe I had cell coverage too at the top (T-Mobile)

Loved it! Wasn’t expecting such beautiful views!!! The trail is not well marked, but if you follow the map in the app, you’ll be fine. We saw 6 people in a beautiful Sunday :) I rate this hike between easy (just 2 miles round trip) and moderate (it gets somehow steep at points).

Trail is very hard to follow. When in doubt stay right.

Short and easy hike but can be easy to get lost if you don’t follow the map. Multiple trails that could lead you to a scramble but if you stick to the map you’ll find yourself amongst some gorgeous views of Mt Shasta, Shastina and Black Butte.

Awesome short hike! If you follow the map and/or the stacked rocks it’s easy to stay on trail & find heart lake. Beautiful views the entire hike. Little steep at the top right before you hit heart lake but well worth the climb.

Great hike with amazing views at the top!

Steeper than expected. Heavily trafficked, so tons of social detour trails but they all seem to head in the same direction. Beautiful views at the top with Heart Lake and the various mountains!!

Awesome views of Shasta and castle lake. The hike itself is short, some steep parts, not well marked but lots of trails to follow that all generally lead to heart lake.

This is a great little hike. A hike up the peak above Heart Lake is worth the effort. The view of Mt Shasta is great.

BEST YET! we took two dogs (4 & 8) and they LOVED it. we didn't stay on trail.. honestly there isnt much of a trail, it's all open and just snow run off paths.. but just go UP and you'll find it :) we found little castle lake too but I wouldn't recommend that for little kids or the inexperienced. but jump around! explore! its the perfect place for it.. nearly impossible to get lost.

Short but rugged trail. We backpacked up and camped at the lake. The view is absolutely amazing at the top.

Beautiful trail, well maintained and little work for high reward! Camped up here over the weekend of sept 14-15. The views are unbeatable but watch your footing, some of the trail is rocky and I did fall and scrape my leg up pretty bad. I was super impressed at how clean it was despite the amount of traffic it gets, I didn’t see any trash on the trail. However, We did have to put out another campers fire who packed up and left for the day while their fire was still smoking and smoldering- please please be careful and know how to put out a fire safely before leaving it in the back country! Also we were kept up from about 12-1:30 am when two guys wandered close(ish) to camp and started fighting about their jerk of a friend named Brian which was annoying but I’m also curious.. so if anyone knows what he did, let me know- I think I deserve to know after being kept awake hahaha

This trail on the tougher end of moderate. Trail is not well marked and difficult to figure out at times. Climb from Castle Lake is mostly uphill , rocky and root covered. It does include beautiful views from several saddles. The lake is very small . Well worth the views.

One will see the grand view of Mt. Shasta, black butte, Castle Lake and the Shasta-Trinity Forest by hiking up from Castle Lake to heart lake. And standing at the vista point next to heart lake, you have the best view of castle lake, which is stunning. Heart lake is small and it’s water doesn’t look as clean as castle lake. It’s still good to be a photography foreground
