Follow signs to Castle Lake from the town of Mt Shasta. From Central Mt Shasta go west on Lake St, turn south on S Old Stage, Veer right at WA Barr Rd, cross Box Canyon Dam (Lake Siskiyou), turn left on the Castle Lake road shortly after the dam and follow the pavement to its end at Castle Lake.

A good climb up to the lake! We followed other hikers and found it without difficulty.

The weather was a little rainy but it made it a nice refreshing hike with very few people. Heart lake is absolutely stunning and Castle lake is beautiful as well. Dog friendly and relatively easy to navigate. Must see!

After starting on the wrong side of the lake (start on the left side from the parking area) the hike up was a nice climb with great views of Castle Lake and Heart Lake. The trail gets a bit hard to follow as you reach the rocky summit. Keep heading up and to the right. You’ll get there. Heart Lake is a cute, little spot. You probably wouldn’t want to swim in it, but the view is the real payoff. We hiked up in late afternoon and made it back to Castle Lake after 5. We had the lake mostly to ourselves for an evening swim. This is a beautiful Alpine lake - including the dramatic teen PDA perched on a small rock island just off the shore. Young love in nature. ❤️

When we went it was April however snow pack was still very full. We made our way from castle lake to heart lake with no extra gears. It’s steep but well worth the view from heart lake.

It was a little hard to find the trail, the first thing you see is a sign that says “entering private property” continue, up hill, a trail with a lot of rocks, don’t use white tennis shoes. The view is AMAZING. A little confusing to get there, but manageable.

basically walking straight up hill in a rocky Creek bed for two miles. when you get to the opening with the big Boulder stay to the right however you can climb over the rock as well. continue up and towards the right in the Creek bed another .4 miles and you're there. stacked rocks help but few and far between. people were camping out there and even swimming. however I would not swim in it.

We loved this hike! You can swim in the lake at the top and then swim again in Castle Lake at the bottom. Our idea of a perfect day! The views are spectacular and worth the climb. Terrain can get a little tricky and it is easy to lose the trail towards the top. Look for stacked rocks to help guide you. Can’t recommend it enough, though!

This was a gorgeous hike. A great variety of terrain. A loft of steep climbing on rocks. Glad I had some good ankle support. I would recommend it. It definitely got hot after 10 am. We arrived around 8 and it was perfect timing to beat the crowds.

We did a sunset hike into Heart Lake. It was about 2 miles to the lake and the views were amazing. When looking down at Castle Lake, we realized it too was heart shaped. It wasn’t a difficult hike and coming down in the dark wasn’t a problem. Would recommend seeing this lake.

A very beautiful hike! We did it on our way back from our road trip Napa to Portland. It was just beautiful with the right adventure level.

This was a great hike with amazing views if you keep hiking up to the ridge past Hart lake. I got a great view of Mt. Shasta, Mt Shastina and Castle Lake all in one great photo. There was a ton of people on the trail today but still found some quiet moments alone to enjoy nature.

Still snow on the upper half of the trail, though you can work around it on rocks and with some scrambling. No lake yet - it's all still snow - but worth it for the views! Stream crossing at the beginning requires some footwork.

Great little hike with rewarding views of Mt. Shasta and the surrounding wilderness. The stream that you first cross over just beyond the trailhead was overflowing and had to detour through thick shrubs and bushes...trail turned over to snow about halfway up and got good traction without microspikes, they are highly suggested for traveling down...very windy at the top, but the views were well worth it.

Snow everywhere! We got lost and had to hike uphill in the snow for more than one hour! It was definitely an experience. Coming back down was a little easier as we could just slide in the snow. Since we weren't prepared for it, our hands and feet were frozen by the time we got back.

Hiked over Memorial Day weekend, the trail was still covered in deep snow. We could not really see the trail, we followed the app directions. The lake is still frozen and covered in snow. The view of Mt Shasta from Lake Heart is very stunning and absolutely worth it!
