Beautiful trail. Dog and kid friendly. However, there is a ton of poison oak to the sides of the trail, and in some areas the trail gets narrow next to poison oak (so be mindful with kids and a dog). Also, if you do the full loop, use the main road as the trail has down trees, and you will have to go off through brush and spots of poison oak.

We enjoy ourselves and so did the dogs, only issue was finding the actual starting point, which after we went under the bridge we saw where it started (oops). Didn’t see anyone which was nice to let the dogs loose for the majority of it.

If you enter from the section down by the bridge (where the map starts) you actually get a decent little workout if you climb with pace. There are some sections, particularly as you get close to NEEDS Camp and the rock itself, that require some care getting around debris, but all in all it is beautiful what the Whiskeytown NRA folks have done to renew this trail after the Carr Fire. If you climb down below Guardian Rock, be careful w the little ones as it could be hazardous. Bugs aplenty in spring and summer, when it’s hot but there will be water since it runs off of the lake year round. Fine for social distancing during Covid 19 - no others on trail when I did it. Also - don’t be a hero like I was and try to avoid the road for the last section. The return portion of the trail is for the most part covered and not worth bushwhacking through. Let Mother Nature do her thing and I’m sure they’ll reopen that section eventually.

Short beautiful, accompanied by the sounds of the river. Currently there is some work being done, so the trail is closed for a short stretch. It is safe, and we were able to walk through the closed section.

Pretty good little hike with nice views of the creek. I loved all the shade along the trail. It was just the right length for my kids to enjoy it too. A few downed trees along the trail but we easily went under or over them. Made a wrong turn at some point and ended up making it a shorter loop but we weren't too worried about it because we were just enjoying the hike. Picnicked alongside the creek and let the kids throw rocks and run around. Nice winter/spring hike!

Beautiful creek to hike alongside with some nice lookouts. On the portion that parallels the road I recommend staying on the road rather than going on the trail as there are large trees that are difficult to circumnavigate.
