Getting There

The Grasslands Trailhead is the most popular trailhead in western Los Angeles/eastern Ventura counties. It's popular because the hiking and biking opportunities in Malibu Creek State Park are outstanding. This route leads to the MASH television show filming site. There is also a Visitors Center in the park. No dogs are allowed on the Grasslands Trail and in the backcountry of the park.

Street parking at the trailhead. Porta-potties , picnic tables, and a visitor's center in the park.

Just west of Las Virgenes Rd and Mulholland Hwy. Take the 101 to Las Virgenes Rd, go south to Mulholland Hwy, turn right. The trailhead is a short distance on the left. On weekends you'll see lots of cars parked on the side of Mulholland.

Decent number of people but trail is pretty wide so can keep distance most of the time. Rock pool and lake are closed - but many folks swimming anyways. Lots of alternate routes to take and overall a nice place to walk around. Free parking at the trail head on the side of the road.

One of my favorite places to hike. Sad to see a fairly large burn area from a 90-acre fire a few weeks ago. Also, bummed to see more graffiti. Litter is down a bit from where it usually is.

It was a great trail but WAY too hot. Multiple people needed emergency assistance due to overheating and dehydration. We warned there is little to no shade. Bring plenty of water and go early to avoid crowds.

A stunning hike, beautiful views all the way. We started at 7 and finished at 9. A fairly easy hike so all levels of experience are welcome. No shade so bring proper gear! Have fun and stay safe!

GO EARLY! Started at 0645 with only a few other hikers and no bicycles. Most wearing masks and respectful of distancing.Made it to the set and were able to take pics and take in scenery. Way back was another story! Tons of people coming in, large groups, many without masks and little distancing. Overall a wonderful hike. Just go early! Oh, and buy fruit from the fruit lady @ the street light! She takes cash or Venmo and the fruit is simply delicious!!!

First of all don’t park like everyone else or you will get a ticket! It was extremely hot today so it was hard to enjoy the hike. No shade...there is a water hole where everyone swims or you can go to the MASH set! Also it was very crowded.. lots and lots of people today.

Good early morning trail. Lots of shade before 8:30am and hardly anyone on the trail. Bridge is out but there is a wood plank set up to cross. After the bridge the trail is overgrown for about 0.5 miles but its not that bad. Street parking was completely full when we left at 9am.

Good trail for a not so strenuous hike and early morning before the heat and large amount of people show up. The MASH set was a good place to take a break at the covered picnic tables. Watch for large amounts of lizards and snakes on the trail

It was a good trail, I suggest bringing lots of cool water, perfect if you have a hydro flask. Easy to social distance, and not toooo many mosquitoes.

I really enjoyed this hike. It is filled with beautiful views and various types of vegetation. The main trails are pretty easy, however there are several less traveled trailers that can provide you with a little more challenge. I will definitely be returning soon.

This is definitely a good early morning hike. I went during the sunrise and it was definitely a fun way to start my morning. It was very easy only a couple of inclines and the ground was only a little rock. The path was very clear and good. I enjoyed this hike. Would definitely recommend as an easy warm-up to start the day. I’ll probably go workout at the gym later though to get in some more intense cardio.

Very popular trail so get there early to find parking. Bridge was out so you need to cross the river via a downed tree just past where the bridge was in order to get to the MASH set. I tacked on a little extra going all the way to Malibu Lake. Easy hike and not overgrown.

This trail was very peaceful and the view of the fields were amazing. The destination of the rock pond was GREAT! I would definitely suggest jumping into the water. It’s cold and refreshing. This whole trail experience was very nice.

Lovely trail. Begins off with dry grasslands and quickly runs alongside rocky terrain and medium sized peaks. There’s a creek running not too far from the trail. There is some shade but would probably be a very hot one to do during the summer months. There’s a lot of wildflowers to view right now. Trail is mostly wide and very easy to follow. I would say this is an easy hike with a couple of short uphill sections. Connects to several smaller trails that can extend this into a longer hike. We ended up hiking 6 miles. Portopotties available in at least two different areas. We parked on the side of the road.
