The trail head is not clearly marked. I parked at the gate and walked in a little over 1/2 mile before finding an actual trail marker. After that the trail was well marked. Overall I really enjoyed this hike. Clear and well maintained road. Lots of wild life- had two separate black bear sightings on the way down. If you want to avoid the heat, I would recommend starting first thing in the morning.

Nice easy day hike up from the Horse camp and good picnic spot at the top. Cal Fire happened to be doing maintenance that day so they let us in the firewatch tower!

This was a 13.8 mile out and back if you start and end at the fire road trail head. The trail head is NOT well marked. Follow the Mattole Rd. west to just past the turn off for Albee Creek campground. Look for the fire road on the left after you cross the Bull Creek bridge. Take the fire road to the locked gate and park there. This trail is a little boring until you reach the fire lookout. The ascent is pretty tough. You can skip the fire look out by taking the Johnson Camp trail at about 4 miles and loop back to the Big Trees day use area.
The peak was in the clouds on the day we hiked so I can only assume the views would have been fantastic.
