Great hike....not much elevation gain in truth, but kicked my sea-level butt on the way up. Dogs enjoyed the run, and the swim. Be sure to park at the trailhead parking, not day use....added some unintented distance and time. Still, a great hike with gorgeous scenery...and no bugs!!!

Pretty hike and lake. Only a few people on trail. Mosquitoes not too bad; worse around lake. Dog friendly. Beware that you have to walk ~1.0 miles from parking to trailhead.

Just came back a few hours ago. What a blast! The whole Aspendell area is a piece of heaven. It is so colorful. Wish we had more time to explore. Now, here’re two things you need to know if you’re planning to visit this time of year. 1. Wear water-resistant hiking boots! The trail gets muddy at places and I totally got my feet wet. 2. Bring a mosquito spray for your life! Oh, one more thing. It definitely felt more strenuous than easy for me. I’d give it a moderate, especially that I had to park almost a mile from the trailhead...

This is a good beginner’s hike to introduce you to the elevation and the beauty of the John Muir Wilderness. For this hike you will need to park in the North Lake Hiker Parking lot. Next follow the dirt road southwest to the North Lake Campground and once in the campground locate the trailhead next to the public restrooms. This trail leads to Lamarck Lake also, but after about 0.75 mi. you’ll see the Grass Lake option on your left (south) and after .25 mi. you’ll arrive at the lake. Along the way, enjoy the great experience of the wilderness as you pass rolling streams serenaded by swaying branches… a great introduction to the area!

Located off Hwy 168 west in Bishop, head toward Lake Sabrina and North Lake campground to the John Muir Wilderness, which offers hiking trails in the Eastern Sierras lined with aspens along Bishop Creek. Parking for the Grass Lake and Lamarck Lake trails is a half-mile from the actually trailhead, at the North Lake campground. At the trailhead there are port-a-potties and a signboard describing your options to strike out toward Piute Pass to the right or Grass and Lamarck Lakes to the left. The trail is well marked and elevation gain to Lower Lamarck is only 1,500'.
