End of season hike out to Lake Susie. Still some vibrant gorgeous fall colors up there in the beginning of November. Winter weather starts tomorrow so expect snow if you are going up there. Very lovely hike that can lead to many options. We chose to end at Susie but you can go on to Aloha or Gilmore, or even up to Tallac. Expect some good gains , the trail is very much up all the time and very rocky. One of the highlights is the old resort of Glen Alpine a little over a mile from the parking lot. It’s a fun bit of history imagining people trekking up here over 120 years ago. Desolation Wilderness is pretty much the magical area in all of Tahoe , but perhaps I am biased as most of my experience here is in this area. Very dog friendly, 100% doggo approved. Some people recommend dog boots but none had them on the trail, and I feel a dog raised hiking on this kind of terrain will generally be okay. Would be amazing in the Spring too.

A loop to the summits of Dick's Peak, Jack's Peak and the unnamed red colored peak on the east ridge of Jack's Peak. It is a long fantastic loop with amazing views of Desolation Wilderness. The only difficult part was the final ascent of Jack's Peak at the end of the ridge from Dick's Peak. That last chute is very intimidating looking, but is actually pretty simple once you get to it. Just carefully choose handholds and footholds and once you're through that short chute, it's back to boulder scrambling to the summit. There is no summit registry on Jack's Peak. It was an easy off-trail crash down from Jack's Peak ridge to Heather Lake, just follow one of the multiple dry creek beds.

Overall okay-very moderate. Didn’t see too many people when we went (around noon). Expect some rocks at the beginning, but not too bad especially for the pups!

4.8 stars? Don't get it. Check the other reviews re: gravel road (uneven and prone to ankle twisting). Fire road was filled in so vehicles could get to all the cabins. One of which was a Land Rover that passed us as we went down. Turned around at the historic Glen Alpine Resort cabin after seeing a discarded bed frame and box springs dumped outside of it. If I wanted to see that I could just go to Boulder Creek. Do yourself a favor and just stop at Lily Lake for a picnic.
