We did a midnight hike and ended up on the lake at 2:30-3am! (Yep a night hike in) We parked at grouse ridge parking, and hiked in around midnight, it was nice cause there’s basically no shades along the trail, so if we had hiked in during the day, it would have been really hot. Make you sure put sunblock, and have UV protected gears/hats! We took the left trail to get up to five lakes. I have to tell you, the elevation gain was not too bad, but the trail was very steep, rocky/dirt. Make sure you have good shoes and having hiking poles helped out a lot! It was difficult to get to the second lake, can barely find the trail, it was all rocks. There are trail makers around so def a good indication! Once we got to the second lake, we decided to pitch our tents for the night... or you can say the morning! Def go around to different lakes near by during the day! Good swimming spots, cliffs to jump off! Def enjoyed our time here! But when we woke up Sunday morning, it was Smokey and our stuff were covered in ashes! So be careful out there guys! I would stay put till this fire/smoke season is done...

Very nice hike. The best parts were Glacier Lake, Five Lakes Basin, and Sand Ridge. We camped at Glacier lake and hiked up to the Black Buttes which was the pinnacle of our trip. Some tough climbs all around but worth it.

Grouse Ridge Road is 5 miles of dirt road that is very rocky and has numerous potholes. Personally I wouldn't do this in a car although I did see a few at the TH Parking Lot. I did it in my Sante Fe and wasn't happy about it. Max speed about 2-3 mph, often less. To get down this road takes at least 40 mins. The Parking Lot is large but there are no toilets available there. Parking for the TH is NOT available at the Grouse Ridge campground but they do have toilets. The trail is mostly very nice and well marked. Some steep(ish) and rocky areas where poles might be handy (both going down & up). Lightly trafficked. The Grouse Ridge & Glacier Lake portions have plenty of shade and some great views esp. of the Black Buttes. Sand Ridge is very exposed but has some incredible views and you feel like you're on top of the world. I think this section of the hike was my favorite. Glacier Lake is beautiful...and cold. Took a quick 2 minute swim. All I could handle. LOL. Several campers were spread out around the area but it was still very quiet and peaceful.
