This hike through the Marin coastal headlands has a pleasant sense of remoteness in juxtaposition to the nearby Golden Gate Bridge. Get away from the crowds and enjoy stunning costal views. Also a popular raptor viewing area. NOTE: Dogs are only allowed on Miwok Trail. Dogs are not allowed on the Bobcat Trail.

Awesome trail for a Sunday. Incredible views at the top. Remember to wear/ bring sunscreen though, I got super burned.

Not too crowded for mid-day Sunday. Great hike if you want something quick with great views and a good mix of up hill/down hill. Seems like it’d be great for trail running too.

Great little loop in Marin Headlands fairly close to the city! We started the loop clockwise to get the major incline out of the way, and it was a bit of a glute burner, but the views were just outstanding! Great wildlife viewing as well.

Took a little over 2 hours with a few photo stops along the way, LOTS of bikers and other hikers out fairly early, so try to get there at a decent hour for parking. Dogs are allowed on leash but saw plenty off leash during the morning.

Nice wide dirt trail. I completely agree, if you do this route clockwise, the steepest part is within the first 3 miles. However, the reward was getting to the top and looking down into several different valleys.

Went clockwise up the Coastal Trail for a steep 2 mile climb that provides a good workout. Then back down on the Miwok Trail for an easy 4 more miles. Both sides are scenic. Best to hike on a foggy morning - as you hike up from the valley you get above the fog line and the views become dramatic as the fog starts to lift. Hiking time: 2 hrs.

Great hike! We went clockwise and up the steeper incline (over the first 2 miles). Definitely the more aggressive incline but rewarding at the top! It also led to a more leisurely downhill hike for the remaining 4 miles.

Pleasant hike with some nice views of the water, but basically no shade

Nice escape from SF- lush greenery, jack rabbits, the howls of coyotes and many birds. Trail is pretty easy- first half is uphill, second half downhill. Good views the entire time.

This is the perfect "moderate" hike. Enough climbing to get your heart pumping but at accessible grades, great views of coast and pastoral landscapes, wildflower and wildlife watching, and wide smooth dirt trails with even footing the whole way. There is light traffic (hikers, bikers, and horseback riders) the whole way but it never feels crowded. I think this is a great hike to do with visitors who aren't die hard hikers.

Great hike! A nice loop with beautiful views. I followed some other reviews and went counter clockwise which was good advice to combat some of the hills :)

Parked at Miwok trailhead and went clock-wise, hard but not difficult. If using your phone GPS be sure to pull up the trail before going down to the trailhead as cell service is very limited. But the trail is marked very well. Trail is in the Sun throughout the hike, and of course it was one of the hottest days in SF. Great views of SF and Marin. Nice wide fire road so be aware of trail runners and cyclist. Trail says no motorized bikes. But mountain bikes ok.

Took your guys' advice about going counter clockwise..Thank you! Parked across Rodeo Lagoon and took the Miwok trailhead to Bobcat and looped around Miwok trail down. Next time I'll explore other trails along the way. Amazing views of SF and Marin County from the top. Rodeo Beach is just half a mile away, I'd recommend walking over there after the hike and walk along the small beach.

Just ran this loop today in about an hour. whoever suggested going counter-clockwise was correct - going clockwise will provide quite the leg burner as it is very steep. Great views, especially near the top looking north into the Marin waterfront.

Go counter-clockwise to avoid starting on a killer uphill grade. Great views on top and very close to the GG bridge

Really nice trail, good long loop. Can't remember exactly how long it took to finish but it wasn't an all day adventure. The top has some seriously excellent views of the ocean/san francisco and marin/san rafael.
the trail itself isn't anything crazy, it's basically a groomed dirt trail. But it's basically completely all vertical to the peak and then all downhill, so count on hiking uphill for about 3.75 miles!
Also, the signs aren't great for dogs. Dogs are allowed on the first 2 miles and then they say no dogs allowed past that? I kept hiking with my girl anyway and no one noticed/cared. It also said no mountain bikes but I saw a bunch up there too so I'm not sure what the deal is. Fun regardless

Great way to spend a Saturday. It is a good climb to the top but we'll worth it. The views on the North end are of Mill Valley, Mt. Tam, Sausalito and it's Marian while the other side overlooks a valley that is probably a good representation of a random Scottish highland. I also got to see some good wild flowers all along the walk.

I love this trial! Although it is known for its trial running. I hiked it with my fiance and we loved it. It is basically uphill for a lot of it. After you hike up the uphill part there are beautiful views of San Francisco and the golden gate bridge, as well as the headlands. I would definitely recommend it if you are in shape and don't mind the majority of the hike being uphill. Fall is the best time to go because the weather is perfect. This trial is also never crowded, only saw 4 trial runners pass me the whole time.
