Gem Lake is a 4.7 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Chester, California that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and nature trips and is best used from May until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
August 11, 2020Completed this hike yesterday and was amazed by how beautiful the entire hike was. The lakes were picture perfect. The water at Gem was perfect for a swim. Also did some fishing and caught 2 good size trout. Only saw one other family there.
August 5, 2020Underestimated how far my little could hike for so we didn't quite make it to Gem Lake but Emerald Lake was an amazing stop too!

First to ReviewI had a great time hiking this trail. Never been to the Caribou Wilderness and it was just so beautiful. All the manzanita bushes around. The lava rocks. Tall pine trees. The many lakes and ponds you encounter on the way. Outstanding. Will be back for the Cypress Lake trail.
