Starts the same way as the hike to Lawson peak. Go past Lawson and watch for the cut off trail to Gaskill marked by cairns on the side of the trail. Take that use trail to the Gaskill summit. It is a bit overgrown and some rock scrambling and route finding may be required.

I recommend starting before dawn as it gets incredibly hot and the sunrise is outstanding. Started early and didn’t see anyone all day so automatically a big fan. It says you can bring dogs but I would mind the heat and exposure plus the scramble toward the top of Lawson is too steep for any dog that isn’t part goat. Recommend full sleeve and pant for portions. Loved all of the critters and hummingbirds!

Discovered this trail last week and have hiked it 3 times now. First time was Lawsons peak, second was Gaskill for the sunset and third was both peaks in same hike. I absolutely love this hike. Climbing both peaks puts you right around 8 miles round trip. Definitely recommend doing both in one trip. Lawsons peak is a fun climb with a cool little cave right before the summit and Gaskill is more scrambling along a ridge with great views. Lots of variety and not a lot of people. My favorite hike in SD so far.

Had fun with this one today. Nice steady climb to Lawson. You will need to boulder around to top. When heading to Gaskill, put on some long sleeves and pants. It is quite overgrown. Pay attention to the cairns and follow along boulders to top. Great views. You can find some cool caves too.

It’s a really cool trail with rocky out cropping, 360° vistas and cool spots to stop and explore or take a break! When you park for the hike it’s an abrupt stop on a dirt pull out off the road, the trail is marked by a large yellow gate going up the side of the mountain (NOT DOWN, towards Barrett Lake. Initially the hike begins at an incline that curves around Deerhorn Valley/Japatul Valley as you near Lawson Peak. At the first summit after a continual 2.0 mile curving incline is a super flat rock outcropping great for photos and chilling. Lawson Peak is a short scramble through rocks and bushes. It’s another 1.5 miles to the peak of Gaskill. It is easier to follow the trail past where AllTrails says to begin your incline and follow the wider trail a bit further so that you wrap around the back side of Gaskill. The front trail up the mountain is a bit more washed out and you have to follow the trail very closely. (I tried going down this way and go cut up by bushes but saw some cool mini caves made out of boulders.) At the peak of Gaskill there is an abundance of granite formations! Super cool to explore! Bring water! And watch out for the bushes that want to scratch! But it’s an amazing view and really cool hike with lot‘a of cool rock formations to explore!

Super fun and challenging scramble to Lawson. Still plenty of people out and about putting their hands all over the scramble. So if you’re trying to avoid people during this pandemic, it’s probably not the best option. I brought a pocket bottle of Purell and reapplied frequently. Protect yourself and others!!! FAR fewer people over on Gaskill with the same great view. The scrambling’s not quite as interesting though.
