Getting There

There are a few different parking areas, but this route starts by the Sooky Goldman Nature Center. There are bathrooms on Franklin Canyon Drive by Heavenly Pond. This trail is not considered accessible because although it is paved, some sections go along a road where there may not be a three-foot shoulder to remain safe from passing cars. Some of the side trails are dirt and less than three-feet wide. Also, there are several steep sections with a grade greater than 12% particularly along the northern section of this trail. These can be avoided by taking the southern route and making this an out-and-back trail instead of a loop. The grade begins to increase along the southern route at about 0.4 miles in. This point has been marked with a waypoint. Users have reported stairs along the trail in the steep sections.

California Travel and Tourism Commision, P.O. Box 1499 , Sacramento, CA, 95812-1499, Phone: 800-862-2543

Directions from Sherman Oaks, CA: (Upper Franklin Canyon) Take Highway 101 / Ventura Freeway to Coldwater Canyon Avenue. Drive 2.5 miles south. At the intersection of Mulholland Drive and Franklin Canyon Drive (directly across from Coldwater Canyon Park), turn right onto Franklin Canyon Drive. Go half a mile and turn left at sign for Wm. O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom. Park in lot on left next to nature center. Note: to reach Lower Franklin Canyon, continue south on the reservoir road and Franklin Canyon Drive. Bear left on Lake Drive to reach parking areas.

This trail closes at sunset! Just wanted to put it out there for folks who do sunset/night hikes like myself. if you try to go after dark, you'll encounter a large gate that blocks you. Just a heads up .

Great little two mile band that branches off into small hiking trails. There are bathrooms, water fountains, and a pond with ducks and turtles. Semi populated but very clean.

So this is a very sweet little trail, I found the upper trail which made it more of a hike, there’s a sweet little pond that’s great for lunch. It just didn’t feel like a hike, hike to me, but beautiful place to walk.

we couldn't figure out where to catch the longer part of the trail as it seemed it leads into a different trail. it was beautiful and perfect for the kids so we did 2 small loops.

Easy trail with loads of shade. Should have brought bug spray, though. The little lake is lovely and there are tons of birds and even turtles!

It’s an easy loop trail. There is a little pond where you find ducks, turtles, and coy fish. Although when we reach the pond the flies followed us until we finish the trail.

Bird Watching

This is a lovely area. If you like ducks and turtles, this is the spot for you! I don’t have any kids myself, but this would be a great spot to take them. When we went around 8 am on a Friday morning, we saw maybe 7 people total. Plenty of parking.

HikingBugsGreat!

Great trail for my 10 and 4 year-olds, though the little one got a little tired in the end. Lots of bugs, so bring bug spray (worked like a charm). Nice balance of pretty views, trees, the lake/reservoir, wildlife (ducks and turtles). Moderately trafficked on late Tuesday morning. Almost everyone was respectful of social distancing whenever possible (some paths get narrow) and wearing a mask (except for one elderly couple...go figure). Good balance of shade and sun. Parts of the loop go on and off a road, but it's lightly traveled, so not much to worry about there. Maybe 5 cars passed us in total. Took us about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace, stopping for pictures and enjoying the scenery and wildlife. There is one steep part that was challenging for the 4 year-old, but it is very short and supported by stairs. Please don't feed the animals.

Perfect beginner trail. Be extra cautious with pups and kids as a good part of the walk is along narrow road shared with cars, hence the 4/5 rating

Definitely an easy trail. But wouldn’t recommend to record this trail, the gps is off, I ran into a few dead ends. It is kid friendly for sure. Will probably do this trail again and bring my 6 yr with me. The turtles were nice to see!

Easy shaded trail. There’s low reception there so make sure if you’re alone or meeting someone you plan before as your phone service may not work. It’s very lush and feels like you’re in a hidden sanctuary. The drive to get there is nice too as you get to see all the beautiful homes on the way. I would go back to picnic. Great for kids to feed turtles and ducks

This trail has luxurious trees, birds chirping and secluded benches near the edge of the lake. We saw baby ducks and turtles by the lake as well. NOT stroller friendly at all. Lots of curvy trails and steep inclines. Overall good hike for family.
