Getting There

Located in the southwest corner of San Francisco, Fort Funston was a harbor defense installation built to defend against naval attacks. Nowadays, visitors can check out the remnants of this fort which include heavy weaponry, Nike missiles, and Battery Davis's 16 inch guns. Fort Funston was also built on high sandy bluffs where the wind is quite strong. Make sure to hold onto your belongings as they may get blown away! Looking for more to do? Check out the variety of trails Fort Funston has to offer! Trails can be used for hiking, running, and horseback riding. Trails are also dog friendly and they can be off leash here. For avid bird watchers, head on over to the coastal nesting sites for bank swallows, as a state threatened species, visitors can only see them in two places one being Fort Funston. Note: Bank swallows raise their young in between March and June then they migrate during July and August. Additionally, hang-gliding is very popular at Fort Funston. The best time for hang gliding is during March and October. Fort Funston is also a Hang-III (intermediate site) with a launch area.

Accesible toilets on site.

Fun trail! Tons of off leash dogs and room for your dog to explore. Easy parking in the lot (got there about 11am on a Sunday) and wide trails. Easy, nice hike to get outside.

Probably 1 of the best dog friendly escapes near San Francisco. My dogs love this trail. The views are intensely beautiful with ocean views that extend to the ends of San Francisco and to the beginning of Pacifica. There’s plenty of seemingly endless beach for large groups to hike together. The sunsets here can be magical. Once in awhile I see a washed up seal, or baby whale. There’s also lots of kelp, crab, and sometimes jelly fish. It gets windy so definitely bring a compatible jacket. 6/5 stars every time. Bring your dog friends.

Absolutely beautiful hike. Extremely peaceful. The ocean right beside you makes it more amazing. Not very difficult and paved.

My #1 favorite spot to hike with my dogs. They love it, and I love it! The views are gorgeous, the hike down to the beach and back is just strenuous enough to make you feel like you actually got a workout, and you can make the hike as long or as short as you want depending on how much beach walking / trail wandering you combine. Water is available for both humans and dogs on the trail.

this is more of a dog park with a lot or almost all dogs off leash. very friendly but can be overwhelming to smaller dogs. The trails are fun and pretty easy to complete but the best part is the beach where you can find a whole bunch of sand dollars and shells.

Best dog park hands down and nice to have a short hike for owners - used to go 3 times a week with my two fluff balls. Perfect loop if you start on trails at the parking lot then head down to beach via the wide sandy path at North end and then loop back on the beach to the steep stairs under the hang gliders. If it’s high tide sometimes it’s hard to make it past where the pipes are so just check before heading down. Amazing views of the ocean and hang gliders if the weather is right. Lots of ocean treasures to be found along beach (mostly sand dollars).

Prepare for lots of dogs!!! Overrun with dog walkers and off leash dogs. Some of the walkers are really loud and obnoxious. depending on the time of day, I wouldn’t really call this a relaxing walk. Cool that your walking on and under old WWII batteries. Some neat secluded bush trails too.
